That's what I was thinking :rotfl: So much for 'no computer after 6' :D

I can't hold out for the shipping forecast, so I put the bedroom television onto QI (with sleep timer) and fall asleep listening to that.

I've tried Book at Bedtime but that didn't work, I usually turn things off before midnight because of disturbing DH and I can't get comfortable with headphones. I fear I might be a lost cause.
    Hi,

maybe an 'under pillow speaker' would help, something like this,

Exactly what I was going to suggest. That model looks like the one I have, and it or something very similar is still available from Maplin. There are cheaper ones on Amazon now you know what you're looking for. They are a lifesaver ...

This is what I was going to say.

I've found I've slept much better if I don't use my iPad after 9pm

Although tonight is an exception, but I'm so tired at the moment I can barely keep my eyes open, so I should sleep tonight.

The other thing I thought of was a sound generating machine. I used one of these when my tinnitus was bad. You can choose various sounds like birdsong or waves on the beach. It's very relaxing, and you can time it so it switches off after a certain period of time.

  • the underpillow speaker is a good idea but I confess to not having any electrics, or generator anything, near my head in bed and definitely not an electric clock btw. I had 7+ hours last night although I had a loo break at 12.30 and the very heavy rain made me drift in and out of sleep. Again I had my air cleaner on at a low setting for 2 hours, it is just like a sound generating machine but I also like the ions it gives out into the room

re changes. Weakness is not a given, I moved 1/2 tonne of wood pellets yesterday, moved and stacked them, all after taking two very full loads to the tip. Neighbours wanted to help but I always refuse (politely) as handling heavy things is so good for strength. I felt quite energised afterwards tbh, not at all achy either but am very aware of body posture when handling this stuff. The two days previously, I knocked down two very big plastic sheds and moved lots of things, including a shelving system in an outbuilding. All this at 67, recently widowed and at 4`11, I am terribly aware of shrinking and have no spare height, so I use a teeter inverter if my back gets squashed and that lengthens me again

I don`t take any pills, except perhaps a gaviscon sometimes at night, if I go to bed with a stomach that feels as though it will get lively in the night

Well, after my lapse I quickly switched the computer off had a little walk and warm bath. I did get more sleep but not a very deep sleep, I was very aware of the rain for example.

For tonight I think more of the same but I am going to eat earlier, I was aware of feeling a bit full and don't think that helped.

Thanks for all the tips, the sound generator thing sounds good and I might try that next. I'm not sure about the radio as I think I get too interested in what is going on and can't let go if you know what I mean. I would rather not go the drug route but might have to try something. Funny if I turned to alcohol at my age, not likely as I don't like the smell!

I have my volunteer job today and GC tonight so I will be more physically tired than yesterday so I will see how it goes.

Well, I was using my Kindle Fire until I turned it off as I fell asleep. Thanks to half of one of these I've slept like the proverbial log for eight hours.

I used to have a sound generator, too. The only problem was that the tape, or whatever it was, seemed to turn over after 30 minutes and start again. I'd be waiting for it.

I also have an under-pillow speaker and a radio that will go off after a time I programme it.

However, I'm very reluctant to use the spoken word as a soother as I'm afraid I'll stop concentrating. I could use boring Clasdic FM i suppose, but like waking up to John Humphreys. .

  • 16.45 and I have finished eating for the day. A few crackers and a little cheese, strawberries and cream and I succumbed and ate a gingerbread man. Drinking water now and maybe having a hot chamomile a bit later, my mind is a bit busy and it needs to quieten down but that might only happen after thursday when my kitchen is finished at last and I can stop camping in the house

Lunchtime was my main meal, salmon, chard and courgettes baked in foil and a small baked potato

It seems to work ok like this and my stomach is often calm by bedtime. Meat is the worst, many of us older ones do not produce enough acid and red meat can take several hours to digest. Gaviscon is good because it forms an alginate floating layer to stop any rising contents when lying down. I never eat any meat at teatime
