  • Just about back to normal thank goodness. The traffic wasn't as bad as I was thinking getting in and out of work. I was delayed 20 mins getting in but not at all getting out. I'm pleased I went when I did though because the traffic trying to get into Shields on my way home was at least three times as heavy.
Got home, did my housework and batch cooking and feeling tired but ok.

Yorkshirelass sorry to hear your SIL's birthday turned out so expensive. I hate stuff like that - forking out loads for someone else's celebrations when you weren't that keen on what they were doing in the first place.
It is interesting to hear everyone's ideas on Christmas - I feel better now, knowing I'm not the only one cutting back and buying worthwhile stuff rather than anything.
DNMS Sorry about your daughter and the phone - must be difficult stepping round her illness. Obviously I don't know about her illness, but I would never presume that I would be entitled to money if I were in her situation. It's your inheritance and you decide what to do with it. Hmmm.

Oh my days, DNMS, I'd be angry & upset too, if I were in that position. Yes, that's an 'unacceptable boundaries' issue, isn't it? Agree it's much better to put a little bit of any money away until they are older so it can really help towards something like a flat or similar, & that's a kind thing to do.(I wouldn't have been able to buy my first little house if my Mum hadn't divvied up a sum of money left to her by my Nan, which meant I was able to put down a deposit). Absolutely none of my business, I know, but in the spirit of support that we share on this thread, I think I'd be strongly inclined not to cave in & give your daughter the money now, not after that behaviour. If it was left to you, then it is solely up to you to decide what should be done with it. I do agree though that health issues probably make things, especially conflict, a lot more difficult to sort out, & I'm sorry you are in this position, & your daughter is not well. Hope things calm down.

DawnW - Thanks. I'm heading south to support my parents for a few days while my Dad goes into hospital for surgery. Their house is a bit of a tech desert - no TV, no computer, no wi-fi, etc. I've packed plenty of reading, knitting, piano music & family history projects. The good news is that Dad's put me on his car insurance to ensure that he gets some hospital visits, lol, so I shall have wheels to get to the local charity shops while I'm there :-)

Afternoon all, I've had a pretty quiet weekend, took a bus into town yesterday and met my Mum, needed new make up so thought it would be an expensive trip out, however walked into Superdrug and they were selling all their "Beauty UK" brand for £1 each! So I got all the bits I needed for £5 an that will keep me going for ages! Had a quiet day today! So far today I have/will:
    • Check online banking
    • Do My Survey
    • Do Swagbucks
    • Package up eBay parcel (not mine thouhg, its for OH! Grrr)
    • Catch up on TV
    • Make lunches for work tomorrow
I think that's about all for now! Have a good remainder of the weekend! :T

  • Dnms, sorry to hear that you're daughter has put you in this position. I hope that things settle again soon, it had sounded that things were on a more even keel recently.

I wasn't expecting to come online and read all these lovely Christmas traditions today!
Ours has been to buy the kids 8-10 presents and they've got to open one an hour on the hour through the day, its meant that they've had time to properly play with whatever it is they have had. Rather then a stack of pressies, ripping the paper off to see what they have then immediately moving on the see whats in the next box. It works for us, Also we usually save 1 present for them to open on New Years Eve after lunch (usually a board game or similar) , keeps them entertained for the rest of the day.
Food wise, we don't go crazy, just a bit bigger Sunday roast really. We have my parents, sis & niece who sleep over Xmas eve, day & usually go home late afternoon on Boxing day, We have a lasgne for xmas eve dinner, Xmas breakfast is a grilled breakfast, if food is wanted in the evening we have cheese & crackers, Boxing day is use up day! awww you've got me all giddy thinking about it!
  • Plans for tomorrow:

Not going anywhere so should be a NSD!
    • Dinner will be something from the freezer from last weeks batch cooking Done!
    • Paint the kitchen ceiling Still to do, had unexpected visitors so haven't had time, and now too tired to
    • Clean kitchen and cooker Done!
    • Do at least 1 load of washingDone! Managed to get 3 loads done
    • Make pizzas rather than getting our usual Sunday night takeaway! Will be having these later :D
    • Sort out clothes for charity shop Done! Embarrassingly from my clothes alone there are 3 bin bags for the charity shop and 1 bin bag that are to be binned :o

So managed to get most of what I wanted done but feeling a bit grotty, think I might be coming down with a cold :(

foxgloves - I hope your dad's surgery goes well and he's back on the road to recovery soon

crazy_cat_lady - I think you've done well to get in and out of shields so quick, I know of friends still stuck in the traffic even now!

DNMS - I'd be angry too, it's a complete invasion of privacy but I guess isn't easy to address with her illness

  • Afternoon all,

Today we've been out to the local (but expensive) swimming pool, we were able to use clubcard days out vouchers which is the only way I will go. Its just near my parents so met my dad there and he came swimming with us too, the boys were thrilled and couldn't wait to get him to the top of the huge water slides! His face was a bit like this  but he enjoyed :)
Then we went to the library to pick up the books we'd reserved for ds1, much better then buying them like he wanted too and saved about £15.
We called in to Co-0p and picked up some ys bits.
Brunch at my parents, then we called in to ssains to get petrol as I had a voucher for double points on fuel, when I went into pay they had 2x 4 pint milks reduced from £1 to 24p :T but it meant I forgot to use my double fuel points voucher
Back home for ys salad sandwiches, ys doughnuts & a hot chocolate, whilst OH warmed the milk in the microwave, the microwave power kept flickering in and out, gutted :( we have a spare (from one of the tenant properties) but that's a basic one and ours was a combination oven one (as our main oven doesn't work very well) Will have to start pricing a new one up.
I think that's it for today.
Have a lovely Sunday evening all

p.s also got my mum to go through her purse to see if she had any receipts I could put on COS for a 1p

    Hi gang,

Not well today. Hugs to those who are suffering right now.

*No going out so no spends.

    * Energy company have offered us £10 compensation for late payment of our refund, which we still don't have. Am considering saying a tenner isn't enough for weeks of phone calls and expectant daily checking.

    * Took a half our stroll with OH this evening to get some free exercise.

    * Not hungry so saving on food bill.

Back tomorrow I hope, after I've taken OH to dentist. Can't remember if they're doing the hygiene appointment tomorrow or the bridge removal.

  • dnm sounds like a really difficult situation. I kind of know how these things make you feel.

Enjoy your time away foxgloves. I know its not exactly a holiday but it sounds like you will get some time to yourself.

And Dawn you are right. One of the things I am struggling with is just saying to people straight away - sorry, we cant afford to do that.

I have got everyone talking about Christmas, sorry, its a bit early really. I love the idea of giving people a set amount, say £5.11 to spend. I have this idea forming that we could do a family lucky dip with different amounts in different envelopes and everyone has to spend exactly that amount.

Well, we had hm pizza and chips for tea using up various bits of leftover so a really cheap tea. I have got loads of washing dried outside and I have spent absolutely nothing this weekend so thats a result!

My DS is in hospital on Tuesday for his regular treatment so I need to make sure we have drinks and snacks to take with us. The hospital shop is so expensive.

Thanks for good wishes re Dad.
All this festive talk has reminded me of a family tradition from when we were little. My Mum (very keen crafter) made a 'Snow House' from a cardboard box. The roof was covered in cotton wool 'snow' & dusted with silver glitter & she painted the walls, windows, front door, etc. There was even a little Christmas tree outside. At the back of the house, she cut out a bigger flip-up door. At tea time on Christmas day, the Snow House sat in the middle of the table with coloured threads coming out from the back door. We'd take turns to pick a colour& pull the thread & on the end there'd be a tiny present. They were very little things - sweets, choc tree dec, rubbers, pencils, hair bobbles, etc, but it was choosing a coloured string & getting a surprise which made it special. Mum used to make the house (perfectionist!) but I'm sure there are plenty of kids who'd like to join in with that bit, it's only the little pressies which need to be secret.
