Yorkshire - I keep meaning to ask what happened with the sister in law dramas. Did you end up going for the meal and getting a gift/going to the races in the end?
CCL - Sorry to hear you are poorly. TBH the amount of stress you've had this week it could just be a reaction to that?" Your vibe attracts your tribe":D

Morning all - up early as DD crawled into bed about an hour ago
could have done without it to be honest but hey ho! So thinking of my list:
Planing a day at home to save pennies. DH did some more decorating whilst we were out yesterday (a labour of love on some 50 year old door frames that have been painted far too many times ) hopefully it will be in a position to paint today and the we can finally order our new bathroom floor this week
Must do budget for next year (I do mine in works FY and it started at end of sept. I used to do in excel but have moved it to numbers during the to year so I need a bit of self education on it to get it to where I want it
Haggled with 5ky last week so need to update my sheet with that too (I know lots would say to cut it out whilst were clearing our debt but it's our luxury item)
Go for run
Might try and go to supermarket late on for some YS items for freezer
Update meal plan for week - have managed to stretch butchers order for another week, will see if we can make it another one
Enjoy your Sunday everyone0 -
Morning all
Still feeling a bit ropey this morning but lots better than I did last night. Still not up to facing anything to eat but I have managed a cuppa. Lots I need to do today so hopefully my body will keep going. I am tutoring in a couple of hours in South Shields (where the end of the Great North Run is) - goodness knows how stressful it's going to be to try and get in and out of there today. Suspect my hour of tutoring may turn into 2 or 3 with travel time.
_pale_ tutoring
_pale_ 15 mins housework and declutter
_pale_ batch cook for next week
_pale_ get a load of washing done and out to dry

Hope everyone is doing ok today. Not giving up

Hi Bob, Yes we did it all and it was a mistake. Lesson learned. The meal out cost us £60 and the races £90. I really didnt think the trip to the races would cost us that much - OH and I were the only ones not drinking alcohol too. I didnt enjoy it because I was just worrying the whole time about how much we were spending. With the present on top my SILs birthday has cost us £190
One upside is that I was really proud of my OH. Everyone else was throwing money around on food, drinks and betting and he was drinking soft drinks and pretending he wasnt hungry.
I need to have a conversation with my kids about Christmas. DS1 was looking at things on the internet last night. This year is going to be far less extravagant. I am just working out some figures then I need to pick the right time to talk to the the kids.
This all sounds a bit depressing! Actually I feel OK about things like this now - it makes me realise how much money we used to waste.0 -
You know one thing I noticed about Christmas once I was actually skint Yorkshirelass? Just how much stuff is wasted. My kids always choose one or two favourite presents and the rest barely gets looked at. I'm much more into buying practical stuff and things that I know will get used. This year for 'main' presents DD is getting a second hand Wii that she is desperate for, and DS is getting a second hand tablet that he is desperate for. On top of that they will get more kit for their sports clubs, chocolate and treats that they will eat, a DVD each and that will be about it. My parents will spoil them no doubt, but I want to make sure that everything I spend my money on is going towards something that will be loved and used. Not giving up

Hi everyone :hello:
YorkshireLass - Wow - that does sound like a stressful day for you guys. At least you will know exactly what to expect if the question of you going again ever arises. :grouphug:
Ha ha Ally - nice comp win!
So today I am:Teaching yoga
Staying at a friend's house - closer to work
Getting MIL's old sewing machine for free :T :j :T
Look at budgets for new house - don't really know a lot except that it's a lot cheaper than old place so that still makes me happy

A few years ago we decided to embrace minimalism and I sat down with my children (then 16 & 17) and explained we would be doing Christmas differently from then on in. We didn't want gifts or if they wanted to get us a gift just one and something that didn't cost a lot and was something we wanted - favourite shampoo & conditioner, favourite moisturising cream, a nice bottle of wine or chocolates, a decent pair of socks etc - and we would buy them 1 thing they wanted and we had a top ceiling of what we would afford. I've stuck with this since and do enjoy Christmas more. Since dd had dgd we have got some decs again ( a little tree which I bought 2nd hand!) we don't go crazy on drink or food either. It's a turkey with all the trimmings on Christmas day with a nice desert, 1 box of chocolates and snacky bits and bread, cheese, ham, and some oriental savory snack box (oh's dream food!) for the evening. Boxing day is a walk and trip to the cinema (sadly cinema is put on hod while dgd is young) and some rehash of turkey for dinner. That's it! Time we have off we spend with friends and family and chill out. Feel so much better that Christmas is just 2 days long and isn't expensive. It'll be even less expensive this year! I will do a Christmasy thing each day for dgd in the 12 days leading up to Christmas, see the lights being turned on, a walk around a neighbourhood with loads of Christmas lights, baking, a new book, watch a Christmas themed film, go to the pantomine, Christmas eve do snacks for Father Christmas & the reindeers.
Friend's of mine whose families kept Christmas simple seem to have the happiest memories and less expectation of material aspects of ChristmasDF as at 30/12/16
