Keren I love the idea of a microwave *pretending* not to be a 'value' one. I can almost picture it sneering at the cheap white microwaves while it shows off it's pretty silver paint job. :D

Yeah go for the cheapest digital - I can't get to grips with knobs - poaching eggs and croissents all require sub 1 minute blasts and it's too hard with knobs....
I can never get to grips with knobs either... ;)

OMG really?? I am terrified of microwaves as it is!

I know it's shallow, but I REALLY want a silver one - it would match our kitchen so much better. Although this time I'm not making the mistake of buying a combination one that grills things too.

Well, I assume it grills things, however, in all the time we have had it, we have NEVER pressed that button!! :o

We did that too - the really disappointing thing is it DOESN'T grill them it makes them go brown and watery and taste funny.

Microwaves are really cheap way to cook - the physics is good - the waves are just the right size to be perfect for giggling water molecules around so they get all excited and cook from the inside rather than wasting energy heating non-watery non-food things (like air and the oven). Children contain lots of water which is why it is a bad idea to dry them out in microwaves.

    Really? Oh crap!

I rarely microwave anything, because I'm convinced that it will explode and I will die of radiation poisoning. :rotfl:

(I know that's irrational btw )

There's nothing radioactive left (radiation is just the transmission of energy - radioactive stuff emits it at different wavelengths - the sun radiates) - but you can get superheating - the lower layer of something like tea can get really hot and when you add a spoon it breaks through the colder top layer and causes a volcano like effect.... This tends to occur if you reheat tea because of the structure of the milk after initial heating and frankly making and reheating tea in a microwave is heathen and deserved results. I like being a geek. I make ice cream at work too - I use liquid nitrogen :rotfl: and I can suggest all sorts of things for Ryan to try out with microwaves and eggs if you like ;)

Hi Snaggles, hope things are going well. I havent really had time to read all of the thread. Just noticed your talking about microwaves. I must admit that my microwave has been a godsend to me over the years, but mostly I use it to defrost meals, reheat the meals that I serve up for the kids, that has to wait while they feed a baby or two.
Mine is a silver one. Cheap one from Tesco probably. If it wasnt tesco it was similar. The one that I am using is actually one of the twins as I left mine at BF's when I moved out.
I got my first microwave in 1983 when I ran my first pub. It was £1,000 at the time. Which was a lot of money. Then the next one was a Combi by panasonic which was £600. By the time I needed another one, it was £39.99!!! The cost of things do go down.
I have used the grill with good effect, my things do brown, but you need a special stand that takes the meat up to the grill to do that. THe good thing about that is that you can leave it on timer, and do something else and you cant foreget about it and come back to it burnt as it turns off. The same as using the Combi Oven, its on timer so it switches off and you dont get burnt food.
I dont think the microwaves have done anything adverse to my health? Na I was always as mad as I am now.
When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.

BB - that exact thing happened to me once with some soup - I put a spoon into it, and it all bubbled up, covered my hand and left me with painful burning blisters. Ouch!

Mooloo, nice to see you - are you all settled in to the new house now? £1000 for a microwave  wow, I can hardly believe they were that expensive!!

So you're telling me that microwaves don't in face have some kind of radioactive material in them that makes them heat the stuff?

All my microwave gets used for is heating beans or veg or soup.
    Quite sad really!
