I agree with you WIRS....it is very difficult to find good trades nowadays.

I come from a family where my grandfather built the family home that he took his new bride to when they married and raised their family...it passed through a generation and as a child I too lived there with my parents...now the house is mine...but sadly not our family home....renovating it was very difficult for me and the need to keep everything sympathetic to its era was also important....it took in total just under a year to completely renovate and in that time we really found some gems of trades people....but its not easy nowadays to find someone who doesnt want to install a howdens kitchen in a rental property.

I found the whole time very cathartic in a way too and as a result we have gone on to not just have the one rental but purchasing another 2 smaller properties, both of which have required work....a good tradesman is worth their weight in gold and I'm now luckily getting a set of tradespeople round me that I trust and also staring to learn so much more about an industry that I knew very little about...planning laws and building regulations are fast becoming a specialty of mine!
frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!

My dad built our family home. My great grandfather & great great grandfather on mums side were also builders and built lovely looking houses near where we lived in the family home. The family home sadly had to be sold. Sadly my dad passed away when he was just 49 & was ill for quite a few years before that with bowel cancer. I'll give my brother his due - he used some brilliant tradesman when he had his kitchen/bathroom company & had an excellent reputation. No way would I contact him though, not that I have any idea now where he is?

TBH I'd be quite happy with a Howdens kitchen. I know exactly what I want but can't find it anywhere. I'm probably going to settle with a kitchen from DIY kitchens as I loathe the fact that Howdens won't give out their prices. I might know some people working for them that I could twist their arms to give me the 'proper' prices - unless they've all retired now. I must go visit some Howdens.
  • Strangely enough my Oh's family were builders too, his grandfather had a building company that built half the village where we met, including the house his parents still live in, and his father took over the company. It has not really continued on though, his brother is more of a general handyman than builder.
What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare

The typical mark up on a howdens is 80% nowadays or at least thats about what discount I can secure with "my man"....actually some of the kitchens are very good...Its just that as soon as you mention the word rental most howdens sales people I've dealt with direct you to what I call the "student basic range" which is very easy on the eye but not the most durable....

...and actually thinking about it in one of our flats we have had the mid price burford fitted which is lasting very well....
