Fly - is there any chance of going back to the company with a request for 7 hour days and being paid pro-rata, explain that you're concerned that 12 hour days (with travel time) will be too much but you'd be able to cope with a 21-hour week. 9 hours a day is a long working day, and if you're part time you're not really looking to squeeze a full time job into 3 days, that's not what it's about!

  • Hmmm. If you gave me the choice between 'try and risk failing or just walk away now' I think I would always choose the former.

However, they do sound a manipulative bunch, so you need to manipulate right back.

'You stated (or implied) the hours were 9-5, but it turns out these are 9 hour days. You will be aware that I am also studying - and of course the study I am doing will be of tremendous benefit to the company. Being realistic, however, I cannot take on 27 hours a week on top of my study, although I am still happy to do 21 hours. Does this work for you?'

Hi Birdie - not an option to ask for the shorter days. I have already questioned the work load from my work shadowing days with them, and now it makes sense why the work load seemed unreasonable, they obviously get an additional 10 hours a week out of all their staff. It is a busy industry and I am (or certainly was) used to working hard and putting in lots of effort, but this strikes me as unreasonable and a sign of things to come/how things will be. They know I am studying and I made it really clear at Interview that study was my first priority and that was why I only wanted part time work as I need the time around that to study (not that I have done ANY of the study lately, but that's another story/issue etc!).

JB - thank you for the useful phrase - that really helps........either way I will have to send them an email about the contract so phrases like that really help as I can't seem to construct a polite one at the moment and if I phrase it right, it could leave doors open rather than close them if I decide to decline. I think I am actually really disappointed they have turned out to be just another one of those employers out to get every pound of flesh as with their IIP and sales pitch I was hoping for something different. (Or is that just my negative attitude? and if so, how do I ram a new attitude into my head?)

Honestly Fly, if there are warnings going off in your head about them now, then I'd not sign the contract. Usually you don't see the bad things about a company until you've been there a while, so to see warning signs from the start is pretty bad, especially as there's probably even worse to come out! If they're not willing to offer realistic hours it means that they're not interested in looking after their staff, which means they won't be great to work for...

Fresh from my new experience walk away.
As you know I had some concerns when I started at previous place (namely I believed 4 hse staff in a 3 year period) I ignored them, discovered it had actually been 8 in 3 years.

Do you gain valuable experience in new role?
Will it add anything other than money?

    ^^^^^^^ sounds sensible to me.

If you try it and it doesn't suit, you'd have lost nothing, but gained a notch on the CV and some extra pounds in the bank.

If you decline it, in the absence of anything else, you'll never know!

You can still carry on looking for something better, even while working for them.I MAY BE WRONG, BUT I reckon that future employers would rather see that you tried a job, and found it wasn't right, than you just refused it out of hand.
However, I don't know all the circumstances, so may be wrong in my surmises.
