Tea, is it actually the work that's getting you down as well, or just this one person?
If you like the work well enough, then having a heart to heart with him, to clear the air, might help?
He may have no idea of the effect his style of management is having on you.
Is he like this with other people, do you know? If yes, then it is his style that needs addressing. If he's only like it with you, is it because you're still 'new'(ish). Does he feel like he is still 'training' you? Either way, a talk might help, even if it only makes you feel better to have got it off your chest! (Nicely, of course!)(I just lurve spiders!)

It's the work and him! His 'management style' could definitely do with some improvement, and that's widely known. However, he's been here for years and is very much in charge of his 'empire' so there's no way he's going to be changing anything. You only have to look at the turnover of staff around him to see that it's not easy to live with.
Without getting too technical (there's some on here who will understand this, if not just ignore me venting lol). The job is safety, health, environment and quality. I've previously worked with the SH&E aspects of that. The actual day to day jobs though are pretty much all Q, and I'm not enjoying it at all. The focus of my manager just seems to be on all the petty little things, while ignoring any actual issues.
As an example - there's an issue out on site with hearing protection (nothing major, but it needs some work). This is my specialist area. I've written a new procedure, reviewed our training, spoken to HR about our occ health consultants, etc. But the procedure is still sitting on my boss's desk while he picks fault in the formatting for yet another month.
I had to check some paperwork yesterday and it's full of big mistakes that I didn't notice before sending it out. Which is obviously my fault - but I just don't care! I'm finding it so hard to be bothered about whether the addresses on a certificate are in the same layout when the actual H&S issues within the business such as stress etc are being ignored.0 -

Could this be the opening for a discussion, perhaps?
Failing everything else, does he have a manager you could go to? I'm sure the turnover of staff can't have gone unnoticed.(I just lurve spiders!)

Unfortunately his manager is the CEO / owner. I've never met him but I do know he would never hear a word against my boss. He (boss) left a few years ago and they created a big new role for him to get him back.
I'm annoyed at myself because I know that the quality of my work is slipping. I just have no motivation for it. It was fine to start with and I really was trying to impress. But the more he focuses on stuff, the more it makes me not care about it at all and just make mistakes. Which I realise is beyond stupid!0 -
I get what you mean though, Tea. If someone is going to criticise you no matter what you do, why give 100%?! It's a bad trap to fall into, but an understandable one! Maybe looking for something else is a good idea, even just to keep your options open so you don't feel trapped... you've proved now that you're brave enough to make the leap so you can do it again!
I don't like nit-pickers either, some people seem to get so focussed one little things that they miss the bigger things. There are a few people like that in my place, we're in the middle of sending out process guides and stuff like that and we send them to interested parties to review before finalising and rather than replying that the actual process looks OK they pull us up on things like colour scheme and the 'over-usage of ampersands' (seriously!).

That's rubbish tea. It's perfectly understandable that you don't want to give 100% if that only results in criticism.
A job agency keeps contacting me. Part of me wants to leave this job as it doesn't really challenge me much anymore but I'm also scared, partly because of the chronic pain and needing time off and flexibility and partly because change is terrifying! But, I feel the fact that the agency is still calling me is a sign that I am pretty good at what I do.Eu não sou uma tartaruga. Eu sou um codigopombo.0 -
tea,
just be careful that you are not getting hypersensititive to the negative.
I am feeling uneasy today. But not for any reason. I had a poor night because I was dreaming constantly. Not bad dreams but not real situations but they seemed to be from my early twenties. I don't feel rested.
DH and the computer are both on a go-slow and I can't decide which is annoying me the most.
I have been quite productive so far so I ought to feel okay.
Right, I need to think happy thoughts. What is good?
1) littlewing in her fluffy white jumper coming for cuddles
2) I saw a gorgeous chap last night who I wasn't expecting to see (saw at an event, not a date or anything - I am a married lady; I only have crushes)
3) I had 3 'welldones' in different emails this morning. It has taken me a good few minutes to think of that last one because I also had a couple of emails that weren't bad but just disappointed me and my feelings about those totally eclipse the good ones):heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Afternoon all
Back to the doctors today to see the results of the blood pressure monitor I have been wearing...I have been checking it everytime it goes off and the numbers are so up and down I wonder if its worth doing it! I don't think it will ever give an accurate reading :P
whitewing, I feel the same too when i dream a lot. It feels like you aren't actually sleeping because you are living another life at night..and then you don't feel fully 'back' in the morning...hopefully an early night tonight may help? Or just take it easy...I also found writing my dreams down helped a little...even just notes. But them on paper and kind of left them there with the uneasy feelings
@codemonkey I would go for it...I was the same a few months ago..I didn't like my job but because I hate change of routine (I suffer from autism) I thought there is no way I could change it...but a chance came up for me and I did...I had a moment of madness and applied and I got the job...I worked there (in retail) as a customer service assistant for about a month and then was approached and said how they loved my 'can do attitude' and 'attention to detail' and asked if I would be interested in dealing with the stock file and stock levels full time...changed my hours to suit me more and keeping things in order satisfies my autism/slight ocd tendencies....I guess what I am trying to say is...jump that leap of faith...there are many good things ahead0 -
code - definitely worth at least finding out more about it. Sometimes just knowing there are opportunities out there helps you decide that staying put is the right thing, and sometimes you realise when it's time to jump. Always nice to know that you're in demand
birdie - sounds familiar! If I was getting feedback on the actual content of my work that would be one thing, but it's hard to take when you put loads of effort in, wait months for a response then get comments about the left justification being wrong! Hard to stay bothered after a few months of that.
ww - gorgeous chaps (and ladies) are always cheering
Right, I'm going to get some lunch then put loads of effort in this afternoon. Have to get out of this negative mindframe before I make even more mistakes.0 -
Ww - excellent list. Hope you're feeling more chirpy.
Good luck tea. Hope you get your mojo back!
Kitty - hope you get a good BP reading.
Pyxis, how are you feeling today?
Birdie - same happens here only they say the content is OK, then after it's been sent to test, they tell us they actually wanted something different, effectively doubling everyone's workload.
I have been sent details of the jobs but can't take them in atm. I'm in the situation where I don't have to go for any jobs I don't want to, so I have the luxury of choosing. That's actually a really good position to be in.
How come when you're not bothered about something being delivered, it arrives early, but if you really, really want it right now, it won't arrive til much later? Day is totally dragging and I'm worried they'll try to deliver after reception has closed. Hurry up delivery dudes, I want my phone!!Eu não sou uma tartaruga. Eu sou um codigopombo.0
