Does anyone know how quickly a water infection can cause delusions in older people? Could it come on overnight?

Based on my dad the confusion comes on really quickly. It's scary. Last time he thought he was playing solitaire in the sky and was getting very angry that the cards would not move.

Ah the film Paul. I did not know that was on. I think I saw that in the cinema.

Relative getting phone calls all night from brother saying that someone had put him in a care home then tried to trick him by moving all his furniture in and pretending he was still at home. :(
Just asking in the hope of ruling the obvious physical stuff out first.

  • Yes, I've heard that infections (or constipation) can cause delusions really quickly. Rehydrate and de-poo before panicking.......... (Rehydrate again after poo, obv)

    Absolutely right, Elsien!

And not just urinary infections, either. All sorts of physical illnesses can present as confusion, and it's so important to rule out several physical causes before thinking about dementia-type conditions.

It's why there are separate branches of medicine - Geriatrics and Paediatrics - because both children and the elderly present differently from other age groups in loads of conditions.

    EDIT

There's a great long list of things here, too long to copy and post, giving loads of physical causes of confusion.
    Even simple viral infections can.

Waiting for appointment Gingernutty not told OH how bad it is we are at the regular meltdowns following cbt appointments stage.

Getting letter from docs to support move on the basis that the current situation may well have caused this.

Sleeping again in a minute (if that little expletive stops screaming)

Hope you manage to get some sleep, melly

I've just rather passive aggressively resorted to yelling "effing shut up" through the wall due to some pillock next door thinking it's a great idea to bark at their dog to make it yap continuously.

Hello Melly and Alan! I really hope you are managing to get some sleep and I am crossing everything for your hospital appointment. Did OH cancel the therapy home visit?

Get GitDog to bark back, elsien! Does Gitdog bark often? I don't think I have ever asked how vocal he is. Also, yes urine infections among other things can cause confusion in elderly people very, very quickly. Milliefleur had one last year and was fine in the morning and didn't know where she was by mid-afternoon. After 3 days of antibiotics she was fine as if nothing had happened.

We have the film Paul, JM! WaSp loves it but I haven't seen it. It is a safe for me? The alien doesn't die or anything?

How are you feeling today Code? I saw that dyac edit and laughed out loud.

And are you better now Pyxis? How are the Am Dram rehearsals going?

I am ok, I have only just woken up. I was awake until 9am listening to the radio, except there was no radio on. It was complete with changing tracks and a DJ. I could hear lyrics to songs that I had no recollection of ever hearing before and was tearing my hair out by dawn. As soon as I stood up the music stopped, the second I tried to sleep it came back. It was so frustrating because I knew it wasn't real, I even checked with WaSp but that knowledge didn't stop the hallucination at all which is even more annoying. There was nothing to do but either stay awake and distract or put up with it and listen. Thanks for that, brain.

    Hi WaS!

Well, I'm sort of better, but am full of catarrh, which is making me feel under par. So because of the big performance next Saturday, plus rehearsals Friday, plus flying to Italy very early Sunday morning, I am doing the bare minimum. Still snuggled under duvet! Even though I'm dressed.
I managed to do a big shop et al. yesterday, possibly overdid things, but I was running out of everything, including paracetamol! So am coddling myself today.
Am scared of a relapse. :(

The good news is that I finally managed to find a way of circumventing the damaged headphone socket in my iPad! A very nice young man (always makes me think of Harry Enfield and Kathy Burke!) in Maplins suggested a Bluetooth adaptor to plug into my amplifier. Tried it this morning and it works! Wahay! Not too expensive, either! Happy bunny!
