The other possible destination for them, that no one has so far mentioned, is also somewhere with a falling population, and a long-term supporter of Syria - where? Russia - how many has Puttin offered to take. At least he can arm the men and send them back!!
But - you've guessed it - despite the vastness of Mother Russia - none.

It is estimated around 5,000 Syrian Refugees have been resettled in Russia since 2012.

Russia receives more asylum applications than any other nation in the world according to figures published by the UN in 2015. However, many of these applications are coming from Ukraine (for obvious reasons). Russia fulfilled around 90% of asylum claims, most of which were for temporary asylum.

I saw an argument recently that made some sense to me. There are countries in South America that are in desperate need of new people to bolster their dwindling skilled workforces. Many of the refugees from Syria are actually skilled workers, and it would therefore make sense to try and negotiate a deal with South American countries to take some of the refugees that could fill positions that those countries need more people for.

Perhaps if our governments were so keen to start wars overseas and meddle in overseas politics the refugee crisis wouldn't be happening just now.

If i remember correctly the last time i checked there was approx 65 billion "lost" on corporate tax evasion and renewing Trident will cost the taxpayer approx 100 billion.

The cost of helping fellow humans in need is minuscule in comparison but because of the typical Daily Mail reader attitude, more people get angry at this prospect than the more expensive issues mentioned above.

What the media failed to point out in THAT picture was that they were already in a safe country. The parents murdered that poor child for their own selfish wants.

They were already in a safe country, but one which they could not live in. One of the reasons so many people flee Syria is its oppressive regime. The little boy who died was an ethnic Kurd, and Syria will not allow Kurdish people passports. Turkey allowed them to live there temporarily but they will not grant legal status, or exit visas to people without passports. So they were in a horrible catch-22 situation. If they stayed in Turkey, as people seem to want them to, they would not have been able to establish themselves or work, and education would also have been difficult.

The horrible irony is that because they couldn't legally enter another country (but Turkey wouldn't let them stay), they ended up paying a people smuggler much more money than a flight to Canada (their eventual destination) would have been. A useful article explaining the situation is here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-34141716

Depends on whom you are referring to? The quote button is a handy to tool to familiarise yourself with!
  • It was you who just posted this 'insult' on another thread wasn't it.

Thank you I wondered how people did that

My point is that you clearly contradicted yourself.

How have I contradicted myself? I would have thought that a common thread running through comments made on this thread and the other one is that we need to stop being so selfish, self obsessed and insular. I would also suggest that some of the comments made on this thread are far more insulting. The child who drowned wasn't "murdered" by his parents; they were trying to give him a better and safer life and that is what has galvanised so much belated discussion and action. To suggest that people have children as "bate" (sic) is deeply offensive as is the cheap tabloid cliche of iPhones and expensive trainers. Happy to address comments on the other thread, but this is about the extremity of human suffering

If we don't support Greece and Italy with solving this problem all they will do is make them Italian or Greek citizens. This makes them an EU citizen and they can legally travel to any EU country they wish.

Besides the UK sound like they are taking the ones from the refugee camps not the ones that arrive in Europe.

I think that's a really good idea, to take from the camps.
In the main it's young men who make it to Calais.
It's far better we take from camps & the families get a chance of getting out too.
