1943 39.5

That's the UK birth rates during WWII. For perspective it was 34.1 in 1936 and 36.6 in 1960.
Point is, people don't stop having babies just because there's a war on, it's just not how people work no matter how rational or irrational it may seem.
Do you not know that a man is not dead while his name is still spoken?

Much better choice of contraception now!0 -

That would, of course, be assuming that contraceptive manufacturers and distributors have the ability (and even desire) to distribute their products to Syria.
Unfortunately, in areas where fighting is widespread and militant forces have taken control, family planning and healthcare services aren't quite up to scratch.0 -

I shouldn't think it will be a problem. Many of the refugees are sporting top quality trainers and phones, so I am sure contraception could get through!0 -
I don't have any problem saying good bye to the UK as we know it, if it's just going to stand for the bigotry and insularity of much of what is posted here.
Britain is a prosperous country and could afford to offer sanctuary to the desperate people, who regardless of what their religion is, are our fellow human beings. The reason we are underfunded in education, the NHS etc is because of the greed of people like the bankers, the multi nationals who don't pay tax and those who could afford to pay higher taxes but would rather pay accountants to help them avoid/ evade it.
My Dad fought in WW2 to preserve freedom and justice and humanity not to pull up the drawbridge on those who need our help.0 -

Yeah, you'd be surprised. Most of those phones are actually cheap knock-offs. Android smartphones can be had in Syria and similar countries for less than £50 and many of them are designed to look like Samsung Galaxy S's and iPhones, yet don't quite have the same power.
There's also a slew of older phones redistributed in places like Syria, mostly before the war. Those places that'll buy your old mobile? If they're not stripping it down for parts (or the little amount of gold in them), they'll be shipping them off to some contacts in poorer areas of the world. Older phones like a Sony Xperia Z or an iPhone 3 can usually be picked up for relative peanuts. And it makes sense for them to have smartphones due to the GPS, Maps etc.
Many of these people will have had these phones for years. Remember that it was social media via smartphones that documented much of the Arab Spring all those years ago.
And trainers? Again, knock-offs. Most marketplaces in Africa would sell Reebok, Nike, Adidas etc. for relative pennies... of course they weren't actual official gear. No different to what you find on some disreputable Del-Boy style marketplaces in the UK.
Worth remembering as well that these trainers we pay £70 or more for are generally much cheaper in poorer countries. After all, they don't actually cost Nike anywhere near £70 to make.
There's probably some knock-off condoms floating about as well... I have my doubts about whether they'd be fit for purpose though.0 -

We're £1.56 TRILLION in debt. We keep spending money we haven't got. Sure picking on individuals and companys following tax law is an easy target, but reality is, we can't afford to spend £1billion to feed and house a good chunk of another nations population when we can't even look after our own.0 -
The other possible destination for them, that no one has so far mentioned, is also somewhere with a falling population, and a long-term supporter of Syria - where? Russia - how many has Puttin offered to take. At least he can arm the men and send them back!!
But - you've guessed it - despite the vastness of Mother Russia - none.I used to work for Tesco - now retired - speciality Clubcard0 -

As you have so few immigrants in your town, I'm sure " bloody foreigners" is a frequent topic of conversation as you'll have very narrow experiences . The poor education attainments your associates have gained: quote
.." has a high level of residents with either no qualifications or qualifications equal to 1 or more GCSE at grade D or below, than the national average. "
This is not the fault of the foreigners in your midst but purely your own.
Statistically also "..has a higher level of residents born in the UK than the nahe UK Census of 2011. .. has a higher level of residents born in the UK than the national average and a lower rate of residents either born in other EU countries or outside the EU, it does not have a significant immigrant population.tional average and a lower rate of residents either born in other EU countries or outside the EU, it does not have a significant immigrant population."0
