Zara - back to the vets...

Zara has turned 9 last month.

She had both hips replaced some time ago and cruciate ligament surgery in may this year - she has been on a lead since the last op as she is not very steady on her back legs and not being sure if it is legs or spine or what else... we are going back to FR tomorrow

As I work away from home, Zara stays at Happy Dogs in Feltham as pretty much full time boarder - the idea was for her to come home at weekends as I do (I now rent a room close to work on Mon-Fri basis as commuting daily was too tiring, over 5 hours per day every day just could not do it) but because of the stairs here and her legs not being good - she has been staying in Feltham pretty much most of the time :(

Here Zara with her b/f Cortez :)

Poor Zara, and poor you. What a lot you have both had to cope with.It must be horrible separated from her for so long even though it is in her best interests.

I hope everything goes well today and you can get her home soon.Willl you be able to have her with you in the week?
  • Oh GR, I am so sorry that she is still not doing too well....and that you are separated from her! I know how dearly you love her so this must all be very painful.
Big hugs to my fave doggy. xx

    Thank you xx

No good at all, MRI spine showed her whole spine is pretty much no good and operation to fix it is not an option.

Discs pressing on nerves, swollen sections, all no good at all.

We started a course of steroid injections, she had fer first one yesterday, second one will be in 2 weeks time and a third, last one 3 weeks after the second one.

Then we will see if it helps and what the next move should be.

She got her usual Onsion, added Gabapentin and Carniking L-carnitine. Pls the Apoquel she has been taking for long time now but that is for allergies.

I found the Onsior and Gabapentin online (out of insurance till 28th October and bill yesterday was massive plus the 2 follow up injections are VERY expensive too) but can not find the Carniking L-carnitine to buy in UK - if anyone knows where to get this particular one (no similar but exactly this one) please let me know?

On top of all that, Zara's tooth has split so another worry, another vet visit to do, another anesthetics and another worry for me and pain for my little girl :(
  • Lots of love to you GR and woofle scruffle snuggles for Zara!

Wow, didn't realise Zara was 9 already. I used to follow her story right from before her first op, but then stopped using the pets forum for a while after a really upsetting thread. Didn't realise I had been away so long!

She is a trooper, as are you GR and it looks like Cortez will keep an eye on his lady for you :)

Sorry it wasn't great news. Did you end up trying the golden paste for her hips - was it you struggling to get it into her? It should help a lot with the swelling in her spine if you can get her to take it.

Thanks. Her hips/knees are fine - those were Xrayed in addition to the spine MRI. It is the spine that is a problem.

Would golden paste help for the spine?

I feel awful for her, really awful.

If she was "an old dog" mentally that would be a different story but she is so full of "mental" energy that it is totally heartbreaking.

I was told an operation is not an option. Also that stem cell therapy would not help for the spine but...I will loo into stem cell therapy anyway. I know it gives great results with hips/joints but never looked into it from the spine angle so will do this now and perhaps...

    :(

So sorry to hear that Zara isn't good. I haven't been in this board for a while either. Great that she is still happy with Ewa though. Although it's not ideal for you, at least you get to see her & she has two great homes.

    Hugs to you both
