  • Hi everyone, I started as a 'mature' student a couple of months ago so would like to join up please! Not been on this site for a looooong time (my sig is over a year old so will update it asap) used to absolutely love it on here though and I need it more than ever now I'm a student as I hadn't cleared off all my other debts before I started, whoops!! So I've somehow gotta manage to pay off all that while managing my student funds so as not to get into more debt! Eeeeek!! Wish me luck!!

  • Hey Violet Violin
Thanks for setting this up. I've really enjoyed reading everybodys creative ideas/comments on how to save money etc. I'm currently doing a masters and am trying to save up to go teach street children in India and Africa after I finish my masters. I'm going to list a few things that I've done that helped me save money ( I haven't read all the comments so hopefully theres not too many repeats here and there are some NEW useful tips)
    ok so here goes:

    1. Setting a budget for christmas gifts for friends e.g £5
or making homemade things with a different theme every year

    2. If you're going to go out drinking/clubbing go to the SU as they've got promotions on. (Especially if you're living in a very expensive city like London/Oxford)

    3. Joining societies at uni- they often have a yearly budget that's to be spent doing things that are related to that society. For example i joined the Japanese society at Oxford Brookes (£3 a year) and there were Karaoke nights, games nights, Karaoke in London (travel paid), end of semseter parties and meals 2 or 3 times a year.

    4. Visit friends (sort of like holidaying) I've got friends in Leeds/Newcastle/Brighton so I bundle a group of friends in to my car and we share the petrol money and once we get there we don't have to pay to stay anywhere (obviously) and we stay in and watch movies and hang out.

    5. I know this makes me sound really old probably but have pot luck parties where everybody brings different types of drink/food then it's not only one person who's got to pay for all the food.

    6. If you live close enough to uni walk/cycle (I saved myself £300 in bus fares just by doing this)

I know most of these are common sense things but hey... I hope they were of some use to someone.
If I think of anymore I'll post again.
  • Argh!! Anyone else in the middle of getting snowed-under, trying to get everything done before xmas break? Got a presentation, an essay, and 2 assessments to get done in the next week and a half... And I have absolutely no motivation at all right now.

    How is everyone else doing?

Lots of love to all me fellow Student MSEs

    xxxx
I got food in my belly and a license for my telly
And nothing's going to bring me down

  • Merry Christmas everyone!

Hope Santa brings you all something nice...

Hi, I haven't been here for a while, but I never got my student number :(

    Merry Christmas everyone :)
  • Im here, at Chester uni, nice place lol.

Just got a Halifax student account with massive overdraft lol, still have savings from working last year too, and due £2000 from money friends owe me, money Paypal owes me(been 5 months now and they have £800 of mine) back money from jobcentre, and £500 from uni in a hardship grant.

Lucky im good with money and will almost never use overdraft(cept at end of months where I have a few days till next payment comes)

How did you manage to get money from the hardship fund if you have savings and an overdraft you hardly ever use?! One of my friends applied and was rejected because she hadn't used all means of finance (ie, she hadn't drained her account and maxed her overdraft) and so wasn't really in hardship. She was told the money was reserved for people who were in dire straits. Or maybe you're talking about a completely different thing, like a bursary or something.
  • I didnt have the overdraft at the time, and im very good with money.

Which annoys me sometimes as the 18 year olds on my course who maxed their overdraft within a month of starting buying ps3's and clubbing all the time got £1000 whereas me whos good with money only gets £500

I personally know a few people in my course like that who got like £800 then bought an ipod then went on holiday for 2 weeks.
