  • should we put something in our signature to show we're doing this all together? like the dfw have something in theirs :) nice to meet u all!
  • I'd like to join aswell!! Am going to uni as a mature student after 10 years in the workplace. I have already set my budget and know I can live on it but also know I will need to work if I want to have more than one night out each week. I am going to ask my work to buy me books from my booklist as a leaving present (or amazon vouchers, if I don't get the list in time) I have set up 'save the change' on my lloyds student account to put all the pennies away (but will cancel it if I don't feel it is working out) and have a fund already stashed away to buy clothes when I get there :D

  • hi! nice to meet you!! it's nice to see that we're all in different positions - some of us are graduates, some are just starting, some are already students - and all of us are different ages! hopefully this will give some variety to the advice we can give each other :)

    I think it depends on individual but i guess 1 bank account is needed (we aren't having tons of money to deposit anyway). The one big no-no for me is to touch the overdraft facility. I see OD as like drugs. Once addicted, it will stick with you for life. So I am ok for my bank to impose a high OD charge to penalise me if ever happen. I don't mean they are right on charging hefty fees but I don't really been too bother about such charges in my case.

    When I was at Uni I maxed out the majority of my overdraft and put it in my ISA (I left about a hundred pounds in it for a just incase situation). It didnt make that much extra but was nice to get that little something for nothing. You just have to be careful when you graduate.

    As for different bank accounts my house mate had a nationwide account and was able to open several accounts online each which he had labeled like presents, shopping etc. For me I had two bank accounts - one was for savings not to be touched, I then had an instant access savings account which i could pay money into but then draw it out when I wanted it.

    Looks good - could even go for a uni feel and have honoury members for those that have finished uni but still have useful advice.

    Well. we can have some form of sig. say
    e.g. University of Money Saving - Year 1 - Highest qualification Degree (Money Saved £550)

    Degree = saved £500
    Masters = saved
    £1000
    PhD = saved
    £1500
    Professor = saved
    £5000 etc.

    so there is an aim to get a degree and also meet a target eventually when we graduate..

    how's that?
