Is anyone else cold? I'm sat here cuddled up under my trusty knitted blankie in August:eek:  I know its been a strange summer but this is getting silly. I'm glad I've been industrious knitting blankets because there is no way I'm putting the heater on yet.

I have been wearing socks in bed since Saturday. I think the incessant rain is making us feel colder than usual. Mardathur is right, summer in Scotland starts in September.0 -

Hi everyone:) Just reading all these posts and It is the same where we live. Terribly wet and miserableN/Ireland, and it just seems to drag on and on:( We have gas heating too, and no way are we going to put it on until later). It is a prepaid meter, and have it topped up, so will put more money into it each week, and it will build up nicely, for the colder weather. I got a lovely cream flleece for about £6 in Ikea a few months ago, when the store opened, and it sits on the back of the sofa, and I have found it is over my lap every night these past few weeks. I was delighted with my order which i placed with British Thermals yesterday and a kind person had mentioned them on here, so the order came this afternoon, what a service. I have never received an order so quickly. I bought about 6 thermal tee shirts for my husband, and also a pack of 6 for myself. They are so soft and warm, and we will certainly be wearing them when the cold weather comes. It is nice to know we have them, so preparing early is a good idea. I am also getting a few hot water bottles, and am going to make a few draught excluders too. The tips I am picking up here are wonderful, and I am enjoying this site so very much. Come the winter we will all be snugglier than last year:) I know we will in our house anyway:)Do a little kindness every day.;)0

:hello: Aaaw thanks for the lovely welcome. I'm in delightful Newport, where we actually happened to have a couple of hours of sunshine today, though it was still freezing!!!!
Thanks to all the great advice on this thread I'm getting into my winter preparations asap and planning to get someone out next week to quote for cavity wall insulation. Has anyone else had this done? I've been told that it should only take a few hours and shouldn't make a mess but any first-hand info would be fab.
Huge thanks

Beccah - there is a scheme called Warm Wales - Im nto sure if it applies to council tenants only but im sure some fo the older people in our village had it doen on their homes which gives you free cavity wall insulation as well as a few other things such as new boiler jackets etc. (which reminds me must look into boiler jacket - ours looks like a load of foam secured with an old telephone cable!!!
We had cavity wall done last year and it did make a difference - it took a few hours on our little flat but it is warmer - the worst part was them drilling the holes!!! but that was the quick bit over and done in about an hour /hour and a half maxTime to find me again0 -
We can arrange to meet up when you're in Bridgend if you like. PM me and we can sort it out.
I often pop over to Newport to visit my friend, perhaps we could all meet up some time. Be easy to recognise each other, we'll all look like Michelin men, either that or we'll have become so hardened to the cold that we'll be the ones out in t-shirts!
Need to get on and line and hang the girls new curtains, need to put up new curtain rails first to hang them on! Will get my pal round next week to sort that out for me, yes I can do it myself, but he is a perfectionist and always does a really good job, whereas if I do it it'll look a mess or be wonky like all the other ones!
Going to go to Ikea at the weekend I think, and stock up on fleeces!
Boiler won't light at the mo, so need to get someone out to have a look, but meanwhile it means that nobody can put the heating on :rotfl: . We have an immersion heater for hot water so before anyone worries we are all clean! I'm not on mains gas here, so just thinking that if I conserve as much gas in the tank now then it'll see me through winter I hope!
I can report that the remoska has been really money saving, haven't had the oven on once since I bought it! Prob make up for the fact that the bread maker has been doing overtime whilst the kids have been off school!GC Oct £387.69/£400, GC Nov £312.58/£400, GC Dec £111.87/£4000 -

Hi Beccah im in Newport too, small world isnt it? I had my cavity walls done last year and my loft insulated, it took 2 men about 2-3 hrs, it is very noisy when drilling but not messy.0 -
Wow! Welshies all over the place - I'm in the Brecon area, so no chance of bumping into anyone *sad*
If anyone is looking for fleece blankets etc I've a couple of tips that have stood me in good stead over the years:
1. Save up all the old fleeces you can find and cut them into 6" squares, then sew them together into a rainbow blanket - free!
2. If you're buying fleece scarves, throws etc, remember, fleece doesn't need hemming so you can just buy a length of it from the drapers and cut to size. Fringing is easily done by just cutting into the edges again and again every half inch or so.
Hope that helps
Really must get on with preparation - including plastering up holes in walls, buying and installing draught excluder tape. Does anyone have a contact for large amounts of "industrial grade" draught excluder tape? I'd be very grateful.
DGIf you see me on here - shout at me to get off and go and get something useful done!!0
