Mardartha...my OH is just the same...'they' should be doing this that and the other, never dawns on him that a bit of an effort on his part might make things easier for us all! I have been talking about getting a new kitchen for years and his question is always " who is going to do that for you??"

Just wondering,I have bought new curtains for my bedroom but they aren't lined. Can I cut the lining form my old curtains and attach to new ones without much effort? I REALLY can not sew to save my life and wondered if there was an 'idiot proof' other way of doing it?
Thanks ss
I can't sew either, but found the following tip on here last winter, which works for tab-top curtains.
I made a second curtain (out of blankets) and pinned on strips of fabric onto one edge, using safety pins, to create new 'tabs' on the blanket. (Leave one end of each tab loose..you will pin it to blanket once it's placed over the curtain rail).
Then, each new tab is slung over the curtain rail and pinned down with each safety pin, to fix it to the rail. This new 'under curtain' sits behind the main, posh, curtain and the tabs alternate with the tabs of the posh one, IYSWIM! .Has worked an absolute treat. I just pull both sets of curtains across at dusk. My 'under curtain, is shorter than my main one, but just long enough to tuck behind the radiator!
hope this helps.0 -

Has anyone had a good experience with a double glazing firm? My sittingroom has 3 outside walls and can get very cold, so I thought of using some of my savings to have double glazing. I'm worried about the expense though. The walls are insulated, and it's a small flat.0

One thing I meant to say--it seems important to me to keep this FUN, to make it a challenge, a personal fight between me & the govt, to stop them getting my money ! - But being poor isnt fun, its miserable. And being cold & poor is VERY miserable, I've been there. So I think its important for us all to set limits and keep it fun, choose some things that really really matter and make the difference between a fun fight and a slide into depression... LOL- totally OT but I had to say it !
Not to mention the other thing about poverty - its BORING! Few - if any - choices and not being able to afford to do anything much with spare time (thankfully I have "inner resources" - but I dread to think what poverty is like if one hasnt). Hobsons Choice is a phrase that was invented for the poor. I do feel thankful that I have enough money personally to have SOME choices and feel fearful of that GAP between my retirement age and having my full retirement income (ie 5 years) when I will have NO choices at all - it will have to be whatever is cheapest of everything. (well - virtually - its gonna remain free range eggs no matter what - as I cant switch my conscience off for 5 years! LOL)0 -
Ceridwen, We both worked for years & years & just got by... the OH was actually terrified when I got ill and had to give up. We coped fine after a few adjustments.. Then he had a heart attack and was so scared of loss of income that he went back after 4 weeks, worked some more and had another heart attack, went back again...until he had his third. Then he stopped work because I threatened to kill him.So we are now on benefit and we are coping fine. We all have inner strength & it takes tough times or a crisis to find it. I'm sure you will cope amazingly /:D0

I can understand that feeling - the one of being literally terrified as to how one will manage financially - so I can sympathise. Thankfully - we all have each other on M.S.E. for advice and moral support - I've certainly learnt a lot that I feel (as someone in their 50s) I shoulda known years ago. But I do still think there is something wrong in the fact that one of the first thoughts when illness happens is "What about my income?". One has far more important things to think about in terms of "How do I get well again?" "How do I manage to run the house?" etc - but one of the first thoughts in this society comes to "What about my income?"0

Hi everyone
Is anyone else cold? I'm sat here cuddled up under my trusty knitted blankie in August:eek:  I know its been a strange summer but this is getting silly. I'm glad I've been industrious knitting blankets because there is no way I'm putting the heater on yet.
