Preparing for Winter

babyboysmommy wrote: »I'm thinking of buying a camping stove. Partly because DH wants to take the kids camping in the spring & also so if we ever lose power over winter I can at least heat water for hot water bottles, food/drinks etc. Anyone know a cheap place to buy them or what I need to consider? Many thanks
i've seen some on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200503937111&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT that seemed a reasonable price to me, especially as it has 8 cannisters of fuel
what stopped me buying it? how safe is it to use inside? also, where do you plug the cannister into? i've only ever used the tiny camp stoves where you screw the cannister below a flimsy tri pronged attachment. i wouldn't feel safe using these in the house (i don't feel safe using them at all actually they aren't very stable!). thus why i looked for something more closely resembling a hob... i'm still tempted to buy this if others can allay my fears0 -
very good annie ! I like that.0

Confuzzled, I've got one and used it a LOT before we got the calor gas cooker. Its flat and very very stable, the canister pushes in and there's a mark on it, & a mark on the unit itself - you just turn it until both marks line up and thats it. It's much better than those older ones that are really wobbly, this is flat and heavy and just sits where you put it.0

thank you mardatha, i appreciate the information
where exactly do you put the canisters? do they stick perpendicular (upright) or sorta parallel (levelwise) out from the back of the stove?0 -
I've just been given two pairs of thin cream tab top curtains from my sister for the kitchen. I'm chuffed and so appreciate her offer but they're so thin and not what I had in mind re: warmth. How could I modify tabtops? Do you think stitching a fleece to the top of the curtain (below the tab tops) would work?
Maybe I could just hook a fleece up behind on a night?
hi
ive got thin tab top curtains as well, ive kind of made a sandwich out of mine ,laid one wrong side up on floor laid a big fleece blanket on top, then laid 2nd curtain, right side up on top and stiched all around.v thick and warm now,and handy cos the flece is hidden so from the outside it just looks like"normal" curtains, handy if ur hanging them like i am at street level.
to hang just thread alternated tabs from the front and back curtains over pole.0 -
Confuzzled, the canister slides inside the cooker on the right hand side, perfectly safe and very good. Dh has one for fishing and its also in a snazzy case - I thought he was taking the laptop fishing!!!
Before we were married *cough* we used to take one similair away for the weekend to a motel in Yorkshire and use it in the room, and it was fine, although I guess now the smoke detector would set off :rotfl:Clearing the junk to travel light
Saving every single penny.
I will get my caravan0 -
Happyindevon thats great thanks. I'm in a bungalow and have never used fleece or anything because it would loook terrible from outside.0

thank u!
had fleece up lat yr but hated the look of it so ive been pondering on a solution for a while!
just a thought for those with already lined curtains, its probably possible to add an additional layer of fleece in between the main fabric and the lining, which would also not affect the look from the outside.0 -

Confuzzled - Go outdoors have these currently at £8 online and in store (with one gas cannister) We have one already but bought a second as we'll be camping next week and cooking for 18!
Are they safe? Well, we cook with it IN our tent (might give you an idea lol) and have done for over 4 years now.

Hi there,
I was wondering how long paper bricks last in the fire? Hope it isn't a bit like how long is a piece of string! Have been making some over the summer and as it is such a mind numming boring task hoping that it would be worthwhile once we change our gas fire over to a real one.
Thanks for any insightSealed pot challenge member no 1057
