my windows actually rattle when I walk heavy footed past them :(

Folder lengths of newspaper stuffed into the gaps between the window and frame will stop them from rattling and letting drafts in/heat out and easy to remove next year so no damage done.
  • I'm thinking of buying a camping stove. Partly because DH wants to take the kids camping in the spring & also so if we ever lose power over winter I can at least heat water for hot water bottles, food/drinks etc. Anyone know a cheap place to buy them or what I need to consider? Many thanks

There are places like am@zon, t3sc0 & wi!kins0n who have on line shops but I don't know who delivers to Ireland I'm afraid. It's also worth keeping an eye open in chemists as they sometimes have things like hot water bottles, wheat bags & things.
In my neck of the woods we have Wi!ko, Lid! & 99p shops & that's about it, so I sympathise with our Celtic friends :o

Thanks a mill BMF! :T We have Mr T, Aldi, Lidl, Boots and lots of others. But I do get shop envy when I hear of Wilkinsons and some others we don't have. But it's probably just as well or I'd spend even more money on "bargains". You reminded me that I want to have a go at making wheat bags. I've got lots of material I could use, just need to sort the filling.

Brilliant :D Would I need to change the news paper regularly? In case it gets damp from rain from outside.

depends how bad the window fit is.
When my brother was a uni, his room had massive sash windows that rattled really badly with big gaps, I stuffed the gaps with the newspaper and having just checked with him, he removed the paper in the spring and fresh paper back in when he returned in the autumn.

The other trick is to get bubble wrap and cut to fit the glass, sticks on with water. Obviously if you want to look out its no good but as it goes on and off so easily you could do it even if just for a few frosty/snowy days. Makes a BIG difference;)

My brother has just reminded me of the bubble wrap blind I made him.

Roll of bubble wrap cut to length of window, as much blue tack as you cant get hold of to hold it in place at the top of the frame, then more bits of blue tack around the side and bottom.
To see out of window, remove from frame, the stick back when needed.

i can second this. the flat i'm in now is shockingly easy to and cheap to heat despite being all electric with storage heaters however this could have been very different if i hadn't resolved the problem with the very warped wooden windows in both bedrooms by stuffing them full of brown packing paper and wedging them in tightly.

using this method i was able to remove a very noticeable breeze in one room and rattling in the other. it didn't stop all of the air coming through but most and what did get through was enough to stop the room needing ventilating by opening a window so it was all good! :p

if you do it discreetly no one will even see it. if you have trouble getting the paper into an area have a pallet knife on hand to wedge the paper in, just make sure you leave a tiny space to hook something inside that spot to remove it later
