Well, I mentioned to DH that I was thinking about ordering coal rather than getting bags as we need them from petrol station - and he agreed!! So next week, while I am taking a couple of days off, I will arrange for the coalman to come and fill the bunker. (I think the brown leaves around this morning put him in mind of winter's impending arrival!).

We happen to be taking a storage unit from next week, and I think I am going to box up my "height of summer" clothes during the week to put there also, as they are not going to get any more use this year. I am back in long sleeves this morning, considering putting on the "emergency" cardi I keep in the office, and definitely thinking about bringing out the woolly jumpers soon.

Do any of your neighbours use coal? I found that by asking mine I got one much cheaper than "picking one out the book" - mostly because he was down our 'area' anyway so didn't need to add delivery costs. :T

The wind is blowing all the trees and plants around and although it is sunny, there is a big black cloud moving this way.

;) Felines are my favourite ;)
  • My car is littered with leaves! I live on an almost hill ( flat around here !) so it's pretty blustery, leaves have been dropping for about a week.
Brambles were out a month or so ago -which was my first heads up. Rosehips and other berries all over the place now, not to mention the massive conkers about to drop on all the kids as they return to school:D

I'm sure it was August when I went to sleep but I've wakened in October, how on earth did that happen?

Its been warm and very very wet in Manchester today so I had a NSD and have been working on my knitting. Now its getting chilly so wil batten down the hatches soon. Luckily the chickens have been going to bed earlier everyday so I don't have to venture out at all when they are locked in. Going to wash my winter curtains tonight (layers of fabric and fleece) and sort out my warm bedding. Hot water bottles all present and correct and woolie socks ready and waiting. Need to stock up on soup making stuff and sort the freezers out as they are full of bits and bons.

    Hi there,
I was wondering how long paper bricks last in the fire? Hope it isn't a bit like how long is a piece of string! Have been making some over the summer and as it is such a mind numming boring task hoping that it would be worthwhile once we change our gas fire over to a real one.
    Thanks for any insight

They dont last that long, depend on how tightly paper packed in etc.
They are great to start a fire, add to coal to bulk out etc
Think mine last about 1/2 hour but never timed them, sorry.
There is a thread on the green board about paper bricks, might be worth a look.

The coal arrived and the chimney is now swept!

Next job is to have the storage rads apart and swap the non working elements over so they work as they should.

time to get the lightbox out. Was feeling miserable the other day and should have done it then. Now have ground down to an almost standstill. We've all had cereal for dinner and lunch for 2 days now.
