Just wanted to say that thanks to a lot of tips on this thread my gas bill was £60 cheaper last quarter than the same quarter last year :T:T

That's with BIL living here and my new baby, I think it could be because the heating didn't really go on until December and the fact that we have fleece lined curtains in our bedroom, throws on the sofas, throws on our mattress and on top of the duvet. Everyone wears slippers and lots of thin layers.

I have just started putting the heating on between 2am and 3am as the temperature was dropping in little mans room and he was waking up around 8 times a night! Seems better now I've done this.

    Thanks everyone :)

Where does the time go?
  • we woke up to thick snow again today, it actually started yesterday and we had freezing fog as well, but the sun came out in the afternoon and it went away, but today it has been belting down hard and has only just stopped. So glad my shopping is done and the coal bunker is full.

:D We got some last night but not as much as they said. The ground is frozen solid and has been for months- and my strawberries have all snuffed it

I was looking for this thread on Thursday but couldn't find it.

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who'se contributed ideas to this thread. We started implementing things back in September and I'm glad we did as last Friday, our boiler broke and wasn't repaired till yesterday (yes - 7 days without hot water or heating!)

The house was 8 degrees most of the week, but would have been a lot colder without some of your hints & tips, so thank you guys. :T

Happily, we're much warmer now :D

Well, we checked our tank (oil) today and it's almost empty. This wouldn't have been much of a problem before as we pay by DD to the company that we're happy with.

Unfortunately, the company that we use, when we had our last filling, did a survey of the tank. Apparently, due to some regs (2001, enforced 2005, on NEW tank installs in England) our tank, doesn't conform, so they won't supply us until we've sorted out the tank.
Sorting out the tank involves (according to the guy I spoke to) simply lifting up the tank when it's nearly empty, and putting a couple of sleepers across the pillars, then putting paving slabs along the sleepers.

OK, ignoring how that could be a bit awkward, um, if we did that, then the pipe going from the tank would be too short. How do you add to the length of the pipe, bearing in mind that this is flammable liquid?

Sorry, kind of went off on one there!

We have a Calorgas fire and a halogen fire and the immersion for the water. But I've found that when this house gets cold, it stays cold for a long time. (18ish thick stone walls on half of it, brick on the other half.)

They should be able to fit a complete replacement pipe reasonably easy surely.
It's a bit of a nuisance though especially since this horrible weather seems unending.
I hope all ends well for you.

Well, from what they said, it's down to us to sort everything out.

It's a shame because we're now looking at other oil suppliers. So they're going to lose our custom.

But it's a pain for us because we were very happy with TotalButler and would have stuck with them because of the excellent CS.
