Preparing for Winter

  • Oh, you poor Scottish folk! Down here in London it's a bit grey and overcast but I've had all of the windows wide open since 9am to give the place a complete airing for the first time in a very long time. It's bit cool at the moment, the thermostat is showing 12 degrees Centigrade so I've got a huge, thick fleece on. I might reward myself later and pop the heating on this evening for an hour or two.

Bitter here in London in my area it has been bright and sunny and warm, Just been out now to feed the ducks and there is a biting cold strong wind but it hasnt even gone dark yet here. sweltered yesterday night in bed and had to ditch the fleecy pjs and hot water bottle and blanket which have been a staple all winter.

Same here in westcountry bitter wind .Sat here cuddled up to dogs with a throw over me ,glad its not snowing.
  • my best tip for keeping warm when the extreme cold sets in?? buy a couple of cheap wool or fleece blankets (the crafty ones among you could buy 2 square metres of fleecy material from your local market and hem the edges) make sure u hav a hot water bottle handy (again these can b bought cheaply from your local pound shop etc) and keep the fluids flowin.....iv recently found a hot drink that keeps hunger at bay and warms u from head to toe........take your biggest mug (easier to hold lol) pour in a teaspoon of beef stock powder and add a tablespoon of worcester sauce and a good shake of dark soy sauce.....add hot water and mix well!!!!! yummmm feel free to adapt this.....eg slimmers cud mix a teaspoon of veggie stock powder with hot water to make a warmin drink for less than 10 cals a cup!!!!!!!!! i did the beef drink during the recent snow storms and i can honestly say it all works!!
  • I love my wheatbag. I work nights and when I come home in the morning it can be a bit chilly even at this time of year. I like to wind down a little before I go to bed: check my e mails; watch a missed programme online or watch a dvd etc. and I find that if I 'cuddle' a wheat bag over my clothes and under a fleece I can easily avoid putting on the CH. My CH has been switched off completely now since clocks went forward thanks to my wheatbag.

Am currently struggling at the minute to repay my gas and electric bills so have been putting money saving techniques into effect still.

    My gas bill was £429
    My electric was £311

This was me stupidly ringing up and 'correcting' estimates from the company - doh! Not helped by the fact I am going on Maternity Leave as of 1st June with bump expected on July 1st. Fingers crossed I will be able to get rid of most of it by then though - but then the next bill is due so its going to be hard! Hoping boyfriend will resist the urge to wander around half naked and then feel cold and bung the heating on though - did turn the thermostat down low though so hoping if he does it will help!
    Time to find me again

I did manage to get some bubble wrap up on the bathroom windows & reckon the rooms were warmer for it. I may just invest in a thermometer before next winter to prove to the doubting toms how much we are saving with Mumma's Madcap MSE-ing :D
The next thing is--when should I remove the wrapping? Part of me thinks 'leave it there'; the window glass is frosted so no probs with looking out, & it will save getting some more wrap next time. The other part is thinking 'take it down' as the chances are the glue on the sticky tape will stop being sticky, the tape will yellow & the wrap will deteriorate before the cold weather begins again. Oh decisions decisions :p

Hi if you check out some of the baby websites or the SIDS website you can get room thermometres free. They are like the fishtank ones that change colour when the temp changes. I know we got ours from there

The tape will deteriorate over time, it will depend on how much sunlight shines on the tape as well as several other factors.
[Though typical British summers may mean that it will last 10years LOL ;)].

If you can pull it down without damaging the wrap then go for it, it will also help keep moisture problems at bay as-well.

Perhaps you could use a sharp knife to CAREFULLY cut the tape at the point where it meets the wrap? Then just pull the remaining tape off the window frame IYSWIM?
