dispite the gorgeous weather we been having down on isle of wight this last week, hubby and i were only talking last night about getting ready for winter. Were thinking as hubbys den and kids toy room get really cold were gonna get some of those 1p an hour background heaters to take chill off. ( both rooms are rooms which come off the main lounge ).

Think for me part of winter tho is to be able to snuggle, hubby mentioned he would like some really big chunky soft pillows that we can use on the floor as we often snuggle up on floor with duvet to watch a dvd( even in summer, lol).

    Hi

I am going to make some thermal lined curtains. Should be fun as I haven't used a sewing machine for a while. :rotfl::rotfl:

    .

Do you have a link that shows one of these heaters please? 1p an hour sounds like a great heater to invest in and would be great for us.

    Thank you :)

It's a good time to keep an eye out for thermals being sold off cheaply in various stores as they find space for summer shorts. I got a couple of pairs of nice warm PJs and 2 sets each of long johns and vests in M&S last week at 50% off. So they are safely away for next winter now.

And as I am back on the plot again, I was able to start my pine cones collection for the log box over the weekend. It might only be 6 small ones, but "every little helps" as they say! And I'll be there about once a week from now on.

hubbys den is only 8ft by 7ft so a small space . can be wall mounted. have used them before in old property and they worked fantastic. but helps if you shut the doors in each room to conserve the heat other wise.

    Hi All,
I have enjoyed the sunshine today but the evening forecast for the next 5 days says low temps still.... this makes me wonder if I am mad to be thinking about next winter already?

I have a pre-payment gas meter and pay my electricity monthly. I also use my coal fire when necessary and pay for the coal monthly by DD. I lined my curtains last Autumn and fitted curtains to the front and back doors, I use sausage dog style draught excluders and keep interior doors closed as much as possible. Having followed most of the fantastic tips on this thread I got through last Winter fairly unscathed (thanks to all of the people who contributed:A) but still feel that if I had started preparing earlier I could have done even more!

    What do other people think?

I am in the same mind frame at the minute Alice. I have a new baby due in July and part of me is wondering if I should really start thinking and looking for things that are going to help keep the flat warmer now there will be an extra mouth to feed and provide for. Doesn't help that our flat is single glazed although I know she will be in our room - we have a very dodgy radiator that works when it feels like and our bedroom is always cold although my sons room is usually warm as it gets sun all day.

I already have 3 brown fleeces stored away ready to be used on the sofas, and my son has 3 fleeces so he has one under and one over him in bed as well as his duvet, then the spare one is on hand in case of spills etc. Even the dog has his own fleece blanket which I squash into his bed with two old cheap cushions so its more cuddly as he sleeps in the hallway. Determined to get the front door curtained this year though as still haven't managed it yet but hoping to be moved soon.

I don't think you can prepare too early - I know a lot of people with coal fires etc collect pine cones etc to help with fuel prices as they can burn them and collecting kindling couldn't hurt either.
    Time to find me again

Hi,we always buy things if we see them at a good price,B&Q had 20% off a few weekends ago and we noticed the coal was on a 3 for 2 offer then 20% off.It worked out alot cheaper than the coal merchant,so we are stocked up for next winter, they also had 6 damaged bags of smokeless coal reduced to 50p a bag but they went through at 20p each.I had never thought of buying coal at B&Q.We have been collecting pinecones and they have been dipped in wax ready for winter,we have 10 large boxes now.Its never to early to start preparing for the different seasons.

I want ask you all for the one (or two!) best tips you have for reducing heating bills... Not for me but for my daughter.
She has just moved from a brand new gas-central-heated house to a stone cottage 1000ft up on moors.
It has double glazing & two coal fires dowstairs, but no heating at all upstairs, and no insulation in the loft  Private rent so she cant spend a huge amount it.
She has a huge teenage son who is sitting around in a thin top & shorts, with an elect heater in his room turned to MAX:mad: moaning that he's freezing !! If she doesnt stop it then come winter her bills are going to be in the ££££££s!
