Preparing for Winter

Well yesterday was wet and miserable here, so that should mean nearly springtime (I think?). But it hasn't been as bad as it was - there was a flurry of snow at the weekend, and a few frosts, but it has warmed slightly overall. (So it's now below 10 generally, but above freezing most days and nights).
But this winter is definitely teachning me about getting more fuel (in particular) in during the summer months - when I see large branches fallen on the plot for example. And to cut up any lengths we have BEFORE the snow flies and we can't get at them....LOL!
We did replenish the stocks last week - we were down to 1 log and no coal or briquettes left at ALL in the bunker - I don't think OH had seen it so empty since we bought it!! And just about enough for half an evenings' fire in the bucket indoors.
I am finding though, that I am doing a lot more baking these days - we are all hankering for something filling and sweet in the evenings, so my supplies of baking ingredients are getting well used. And I am ending up baking midweek after dinner - which I NEVER do. It would always be a weekend thing up to now.
I am also finding that, apart from spending a lot more nights in the sitting room (where the open fire is - and lit) rather than the kitchen/diner/living room once dinner and chores are over, we are lighting the tealights a lot more too. Not just the aromatherapy oil burner (usually lavendar, chamomile and mandarin), but 4-5 other tealights and candles too. Even OH wants to have them lighting to cheer us up and make us FEEL warmer - and he normally only wants the oils. I guess they'll be on the list of things to replenish over the summer....GC 2010 €6,000/ €5,897

I don't know anything about kgs, my brain still lives in lbs and oz. To me, a sack of coal is 1 cwt and there are 20cwt to the ton. LOL! Our coal isnt coal, its smokeless eggs . Maybe that's why its £15 a bag.
Still way below freezing here, the snow that fell in the last few days still like concrete. and the lambing has started on one farm. Poor wee things.0 -
Ours is smokeless eggs also, at £15 a bag. I'm going to have to stock up more over the summer - I saw the bottom of my coalbunker over christmas for the first time ever also, and the logs have ran out - I have a delivery planned for next week.
We keep getting small flurries of snow but the ground is covered in a heavy frost, iced over. It's treacherous underfoot again.0 -
Well apparently today we are due to hit 10 degrees but it wont feel that way as we are due lots of heavy rain - although looking out my window at the minute I can actually see what I think is a patch of blue sky and apparently tomorrow there is meant to be this big yellow shiny thing in the sky - I'll let you know if there are any sightings though although not hopes of tropical temperatures as it looks like we have a steady 9 degrees tomorrow then back down to 5. I am so ready for the summer months - I need some heat god damn it!
I loved the days when we had a coal bunker but I did begrudge my morning chore of filling the coal scuttle at 7am and lighting the morning fire but I really miss it now.told OH that if we ever go to buy a house then I want a coal fire in it. :T
Well have to brave going to town today - not amused - want to stay in and snuggle in the warmth - although strange thing is I haven't had heating on last night and feel ok although I have stolen bens Ben 10 fleece so maybe that's why. Although am sneezing a lot at the minute.
Anywho, looking forward ot a nice hot bowl fo chicken noodle soup when I get home but have the school run to do first.have a good day all

I just had a quick look at the 5 day forecast for here and it looks good for a change. Tomorrow's going to be cloudy, but the rest of the week is going to be sunny. Allegedly!0 -
I got my quarterly gas bill last week and it looks like all those endless weeks of self-sacrifice sitting in 13 degree temps have paid off. Last winter's bill was £100 and this one was £60. I think my neighbours heard me cheering. Now for the leccy bill which I know will be higher than last year as I'm home all day now and last year I was working full-time0
