Preparing for Winter

I survived the camping! In fact it was boiling on Saturday, it hit 30 degrees in our tent!
Today I ended up switching the heating on for half an hour at lunch time. We have a large kitchen which only has a glazed door for light and faces west so it only gets a tiny bit of sun at the end of the day. When I go in there at lunch time from the sitting room, which is on the east side of the house and has been warming up all morning, the kitchen feels freezing. I have a 14 month old so we need to sit at the table and lunches tend to be fairly drawn out affairs! I'm thinking about a little electric heater just to warm it up a bit when we go through for lunch, any recommendations? It warmed up pretty quick and I went round and checked the thermostatic radiator valves were all on sensible settings, they were, the bedroom radiators didn't come on, I'll check them properly once it gets properly cold.
I love the big knitted throw Buxtonrabbitgreen! Where did you get the wool from? I love knitting but find buying wool makes it too expensive. That reminds me I dug out the slippers I knitted last year and I've worn holes in the bottom so I think I'll have to make a new pair, only took an evening last time so not too big a job.0 -

Ikea has got fleece blankets with holes punched along one edge which they say on their website means you can hang them to use as winter curtains! I feel a shopping trip coming up - I also want to get another quilt to put under the bottom sheet as that sounds so cosy!
Hi rosepink1984 - those fleece blankets sound great!! I've tried searching on their website but couldn't find them. Do you have a link? I'm not really near an Ikea. Cheers.

Just had the Lidl specials email - from Monday 5th October they're selling microfibre baby blankets for £4.99 and gel hot water bottles for £2.99. Also kids' slippers and thick tights (women's sizes). Winter's definitely on the way!... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

Thanks for all the kind comments about the throw. I feel quite chuffed. I used to do a lot of knitting and sell it years ago when I wasn't at work.
I used to buy a LOT of yarn at the knitting exhibitions. They don't have them anymore though. So I am still working through my stockpile.
It is expensive to buy yarn now. But I will have a think about making a few to sell on e bay. They would just have to be with whatever colours I have though.Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination:beer:

Great throw, buxtonrabbitgreen - bet that will definitely keep you warm this winter.
I used to do crochet ones - using recycled yarn. Always worked in 2 strands of yarn at a time on a large hook and made it into one HUGE square - just changing the yarn as each one ran out - sort of 'tweedy' effect - AND it kept me warm while I was working on it.
Thanks for the heads-up on the 'gel hotties', rosieben - going to get some of these for the dgk's and then make covers for them- wonder if I can find pics of upsy-daisy, iggle-piggle and Ben10 to 'translate' into knitting patterns.

We've just moved into a house with open plan stairs, I can already visualise the heat vanishing up them so I had a good measure up and brought 5 of the £2 chocolate brown fleece blankets from Asda...have sewn them all together and rigged up a net wire all around the stair well to hang it from....makes the room look lovely and cosy and hopefully will do the job of catching some of the heat."Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. Well this afternoon I'm home, so I'm reorganising my wardrobe and sorting out my winter wear. I found four jumpers which I has forgotten about! I bought them at a time when I was stocking up on classic cut garments as they never go out of fashion. They were a good price in the sales about 3 years ago, and I knew it would be a good piece of moneysaving, because here they are, brand new, lol! Nice colours too.
One thing I bought over the weekend was a large throw for my double futon, from Primark, at £12. It's a fleecy one and so large that I can fold it in two and it still just covers the bed so that in practice I have two extra blankets.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -
I'm another one with an open-plan living room/stairs - darn nuisance. We never have the upstairs rads on at all, BUT the bedrooms always feel warmer than the living room in winter .
Comes in handy though when you can use the landing bannister for drying king-size duvet covers in the middle of witner :j.0 -
Ollie me OH has that along with cold stone tiled floors, no doors lounge to dining room or dining to kitchen and front door right next to the wall with the radiator on.... when I have been there over winter I have spent most of the day upstairs as it is the only place bearable. What Would Bill Buchanan Do?0
