Preparing for Winter

This morning it was freezing so I have been motivated to dig out an old pair of curtains that are lined to hang in the bedroom. They in no way match the bedroom but they are warm and darkening and will do a great job until I can afford to decorate the bedroom. So tempted to put the heating on!Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0

I said a while back I'd let folks here know when I saw hotties!
Saw one today, by accident, when I was looking for something else in Morrisons - ribbed on one side plain on other and with TWO year guarantee for £2.25.
Not too bad a price when you consider its got a two year guarantee!0 -
wow thats a good price. i've laods of hot water bottles but i can't find the stoppers anywhere. i used to keep them screwed in but i can't remember where i heard it , but if you do it makes them perish quicker
so now i've loads of bottles and only 1 bung . no i dea if i can buy spare one's so it looks like i'm gonna have to replace them with new. seems such a shame.

It won't help with the ones you've already got - and lost the lids for - but I always tie the lids onto the top of the hot water bottle with some string - just enough to be able to reach when its done up, but not too much. Most hot water bottles have a hole in the rubber just above the opening, but if not I make one to put the string through.0

Well I managed my first part of preparing for winter whcih was keeping the heating off until 1 Oct, first time in a long time I have done this.
This weekend I will replace the draft excluders, drag out a quilt and pop some new flannel bedding on!
Also need to take boots for reheeling and all is practically sortedMust remember to have a look for some thick gloves for walking the dog in the winter
Might check out those hotties in Mr M if I can't find my old one.final unsecured debt to repay currently £8333Proud to be Dealing With my DebtDFW Nerd 1154 Long Haul 1550 -
I have been pricing thermal curtain linings but the way my curtains hang it still wouldnt stop the cold coming into the room from the windows.
Then I thought about using just fleece fabric to line right against the actual glass - ie cut the fabric to cover the entire window.
Has anyone done this? Do you just put it up at night and if so how do you fix it to the window? I was thinking about just rolling it up and using ribbons to tie it in a roll. Also does anyone know where I can buy cheap fleece by the metre on-line?Kondo'ed 76 items from wardrobe, 4 carrier bags of books0 -
i think im fully ready for winter
bought the flannel bedding tonight off qvc and was a bit of an ouch moment, but £51.48 for 2 king size sheets, 4 pillow cases and a king size duvet is a bargain to be had so i bought 2 sets. my reasoning is that its going to last me for donkeys years to come. just got the dressing gown to buy and thats a luxury not a nessicity.
is it bad that i want power cuts to happen so i can use my emergency box etc
thanks everyone for sharing your own lists its been really helpful.
[STRIKE]1. must make a car emergency box. very important as i now drive and will be using the car to get to work. thinking torch, aa membership details, warning triangle thingey, couple of bottles of juice, box of cereal bars, blankets and some cash - say £20 as a mix of change and a note?[/STRIKE]
[STRIKE][]2. getting salt for the front path so i dont break my neck[/STRIKE].
[STRIKE]3. digging out the dehumidifier for when drying clothes in the house.
[/STRIKE]4. getting matches. i only have a lighter so might be a wise investment of a few pence.[/STRIKE]
[STRIKE]5. emergency box for the house. i'm a worrier and people talking about power cuts means i want to be prepared for all weather. in this im thinking torch, candles, matches, corkscrew, hot chocolate, marshmallows and a big bar of chocolate! gas hob so will be able to get a hot drink and a hot meal even if cooking by candle light. corkscrew so i dont need to go rooting round for one as wine by candlelight is nice[/STRIKE]
[STRIKE]6. get some uht milk in[/STRIKE]
[STRIKE]7. making sure the medicine box is stocked with decongestents and vick's
[/STRIKE]8. new toweling dressing gown so that i can alternate giving each time to dry out
[STRIKE]9. thick socks for oh as i can wear his socks but he cant wear mine[/STRIKE]
10. hat, scarf and gloves for both of us
[STRIKE]11. slippers for us both[/STRIKE]
[STRIKE]12. dig out the electric radiator for bedroom - boost the bedroom heat for a little bit before bed making the room nice and toasty[/STRIKE]
13. change lightweight duvet to 13.5tog duvet on our bed
[STRIKE]14. find and buy flannelette sheets[/STRIKE]
[STRIKE]15. see if asda still do the terry bedding in a bag (had this years ago and it was lovely and toasty warm)[/STRIKE]
[STRIKE]16. buy flask in case of power cut and needing to heat water. the water will then stay hot without needing to keep heating it on the stove.[/STRIKE]
[STRIKE]17. get some nice bubble bath for those nights when it is truely awful[/STRIKE].
[STRIKE]18. get plug in landline rather than cordless phones in case power does go out. would be nice to be able to make a phonecall rather than using mobile.
[/STRIKE]19. make the board games more accesable than they are now for something to do if powercut does happen.
[STRIKE]20. buy a battery powered/wind up radio just in case.[/STRIKE]Debt free 3 years early :j
Savings for house deposit - very healthy

I think there was some discussion about people attaching fleece to their existing curtains. I think it was in the preparing for winter thread.

Asda & Ikea have cheap fleece throws, I'm not sure about the price of Ikea's but Asda's is only about £2. Most people have just made linings from them as it works out cheaper than buying fleece by the metre.
The "preparing for winter" thread is huge but there's posts about fleece linings in the last few pages.Dum Spiro Spero0
