How would it not affect the chimney - I suppose you could pay to have it swept at the end of your tenancy, but tbh I wouldn't expect your LL to go for it. He'd have to be certain that the chimney was fully functional (not leaking) too, which is an additional expense.

I live in a rented house that has a chimney - I have an open fire, we currently burn logs on it to help heat the house. Other than that, all we have are 3 storage heaters, no heating in the kitchen at all (since the original wood burning Rayburn was removed) and it's part of the tenancy agreement that the chimney gets swept once a year. By installing a new log burning stove in the gap where the Rayburn used to be, we would not be adversely affecting the chimney or livingroom fireplace. It would be a simple case of having the logburner removed and the access point into the kitchen chimney resealed before we left the property. Does that make sense? Apologies if it doesn't, I know what I mean, I think. :o

Today is the day I will finally get my curtain rails! Then my livingroom and my hall will be all warm and snuggly (if my OH ever puts them up!)

If only that was true! LOL I'd get the drill out and could drill my way to Australia before anyone here offered to finish the job voluntarily. :rotfl:

the previous owners of this house had been happily using a wood burning stove not realising that the chimney was leaking into the loft, full of tar and a wonderful fire/CO hazard. Maybe they didn't realise that it would affect the chimney.

so glad it's not just me that has encountered this problem. I understand why some people cant get their head around why open fire chimneys are not automatically suitable for all kinds of fires, it baffled me when I realised how big the problem was and it took ages to find someone who could sort it out - unfortunately not all chimneysweeps/builders know a lot about working chimneys.

Stocked up on cold & flu remedies this morning in the supermarket (although I had flu 2 weeks ago so it's not necessarily a winter thing...): got lemsips, cough mixture, calpol, vapour rub and throat sweets, all supermarket own brand though.

Sorted out mine and the kids clothes this afternoon, putting away all of the summer ones and pulling out warm cardis and cord trousers... I love wearing snuggly clothes again!

Well I'm pretty chuffed today as I made my very first curtain! OK, not my first curtain per se, but the first I have made with my very own hands!

It's not the best curtain in the world, and the seams are a bit wobbly but it's a fairly decent start and it will do the job keeping the bathroom warmer :j

I have the perfect solution to that one, LOL:rotfl: I tell my OH he has till Friday or whatever to do the job and then I'm calling out 'a man who does'. He thought I was jolking, but his smile faded when I gave him the bill for the gutter cleaner! Never had to ask twice again.

Its meant to be spring here in Australia but it is sooo cold atm. Ive got 5 layers on and a doona over my knees and a hottie. This has been my attitude all winter, the only time the heater goes on is when my OH gets ready for work so he can jump in front of it after showering:D and when my MIL was here. Personally i hate the drying effect of heating and obviously the cost and while my OH prefers a heated environment he is pragmatic enough to realsie it is very expensive and not environmentally sound. I have friends who think Im mad when they come over and Ive got a beanie, scarf, jumpers on lol. Also i try to do some exercise in the morning to warm me up for the day and porridge also helps. I also have a thermos of tea next to my PC and find this is very warming. I hope it warms up soon tho or my veggies will suffer:eek:
