  • my metabolism is definitely working better now that I cycle almost every day, I don`t feel cold. I am wearing a cotton short sleeved nightie and chose to sit here in a thin cotton dressing gown on top and last night sat knitting in the lounge in a jumper and thin cotton trousers and crocs with holes in them. It was definitely not like this last year, when I didn`t cycle.

Those of you who don`t know me, I am 60 and an ample frame (getting de-ampled though) and getting out even on a grey day, really does lift the spirits. I don`t rush anywhere but I do use my panniers for shopping. Try it if you can. It is much better than switching on the ch

Its getting a bit chilly and I have now mastered getting dry in under 30 seconds from the shower in a morning lol!!! brrrgggghhhh!

Luckily we've got a stand-alone shower so I just hang my towel over it and dry myself inside the cubicle before getting out as it stays warm in there. The temperature drop outside the shower is incredible and really noticeable if I am still wet!!!

Kittie I wish I could. We used to go walks, that heats you up too. There's nowhere to cycle to out here though, even if I was fit enough. I would have to go so far along the back road then make a u turn and come back , the next village is 20 miles !

One thing I do miss on these damp misty cold mornings is a warm towel after a shower and without the central heating there is no heat in the bathroom. I'm sure years ago we used to have a plug in towel rail so I thought of getting one of those on the landing (not in the bathroom obviously) and it would take the chill off upstairs too a bit. But I've looked in Argos etc and can't seem to find them now and wonder if after all I'm imagining it. Has anyone seen one and can recommend a shop?

A cold damp towel in the morning is not the way to start the day! My central heating is broken and there's no way I can afford any oil at the moment anyway so I can't put it on even if tempted!

Or, what do you do about towels? thanks, Liz

the kids dont even seem to have noticed yet as they have flanellette pjs , flannelette sheets duvets and blankets on the beds!

Do the flannelette sheets etc make a big difference compared to normal cotton?
I was tempted to get some as I remember them being so soft on my own bed as a little girl and would scrape together the extra cash if it would make it warmer for my sons as we can't afford the heating on either for a while.

Totally agree about wet towels - there's nothing worse, especially in the winter. I'm looking to invest in a towel rail from Coopers of Stotford ( one of those catalogues that's always falling out of the papers at the weekend!)that I saw in their catalogue for £19.99 (unless anyone knows of anywhere cheaper?)

We had those fluffy underblankets and they were lovely and warm.We have a quilted one now and although its comfy it takes ages to get warmed up.

I've got one of those on my bed, not a quilted one, but I put a quilt on the matress first, then the half sheep/half sheet thing, then a brushed cotton sheet on top of all that... and wow... it's like sleeping on clouds :p
    TOP MONEYSAVING TIP

Make your own Pot Noodles using a flower pot, sawdust and some old shoe laces. Pour in boiling water, stir then allow to stand for two minutes before taking one mouthful, and throwing away. Just like the real thing!

Thank you!! That's exactly the sort of thing I remembered - the price seems ok too. Having cut right back on luxuries (including newspapers) I really miss all those little catalogues. Brilliant!
