  • Thanks for those words of encouragement :A

I hate to depress you further but my fuel man told me he is expecting a 30% increase in the prices.

He said that the solid fule/coal industry had been delighted when they felt that due to the hike in gas/electric, they were for the first time in ages in a position to compete in the fuel market. Now, they are once again not realy a viable option if cost is everything. He sounded so down I actually felt very sorry for him.
Thank you for this site :jNow OH and I are both retired, MSE is a Godsend
  • I've been falling about laughing at some of your posts. I'm supposed to be finishing off a history paper on Ancient France for my local U3A group (studying for "oldies) but this is so much more entertaining.

I do have a question. How do you attach the foil behind your radiators. I've seen answers to this somewhere (maybe on this thread) but can't remember where.

    Thanks for the chuckles.

    Gill

Edit: Does anyone rmember Liberty bodices? I hated wearing them but loved the smell when they were new in September!!

  • wow muppet 81 you have been busy

Have ben decorating the kids rooms this week and have used some sealant around the upvc units as they had been letting draughts in

I also paid for extra thick underlay for the new carpets coming next week to stop draughts under floorboards

I have aquired some BNIB curtains from freecycle and i have some thermal linings to sew that my mum gave me

    The result nice cosy Kids

Have been looking for nice ie plain coloured flannelette fitted sheets and duvet covers with no luck any tips??

Also looking for flannelette PJ's for DS age 8 but size 9-10 dont seem to do them in big sizes ??

Hubby has ordered 3 wind up lanterns for £10 each from one of those book club things at his work hope they are OK as thats 3 for the price of 1 of the ones i had been looking at

We too are a 1 income family and since halving our income we are no worse off than before ,lots of little savings and an awarenes where the money goes was the best help in reducing spends,it is possible to live smarter rather than work harder to spend more

    Hi all

Shaz... keep an eye out in lidl they used to get the sheets in... if not Let me know and I can always price them up here for you... The lovely Germans REALLY know how to prepare for winter :T I Love snuggly buggly flannalette sheets

When we had our last house carpeted we had the best underlay you could get (my brother used to work for a carpet place) so told us that cheaper carpet on the best underlay wore better and was comfier than expensive carpet on cheap underlay -and as he pointed out -when you replace the carpet (our house is let out so we will replace when we take it back) you keep the underlay;) so we paid more for underlay than carpet :rotfl:

Bertibots..thank heavens mum never made duffle coats (although I did have 1)... but in summer she used to make dresses with matching knickers... the one with clowns on is burnt in my mind :o and i was only 5 at the time ..

Our windows used to ice over but once we were tucked up in bed we were toasty warm and always used to get up to a pressure cooker full of porridge that mum had made before going to work ...apart from the morning that we came down to toast...dad felt sorry for the poor kids nextdoor going out cold n hungry -so gave them OUR porridge... we weren't impressed -nor was mum when we told her :rotfl: -she had 5 kids to feed too ..but good old dad knew we never ever went hungry or cold even though he couldn't work.. so they relied on 1 wage... next door were both on benefits and working on the side so no doubt had more coming in than us.. but our parents had their priorities sorted ;)

that's very interesting re carpet and underlay. I get bored of the same carpet after a few years and will do this in future.

Do I detect a touch of paganism Hapless (just googled Skadi ;) ) ?

    Funny you should mention winter and Yule as my OH was talking about Christmas presents and whether I'll be cooking a goose or a turkey last night -most unusual for him to be thinking ahead. I think it's the miserable weather. I love the period between back to school and year's end -all the planning and squirreling away nice things to eat. My plans always seem to centre around food. This autumn/late summer I shall be making;
    sweetcorn relish
    bread and butter pickles
    damson chutney
    damson gin
    qunice cheese
    quince vodka
stewed or pureed fruit for the freezer
    Christmas/Yule cake
    mincemeat
    Christmas/Yule pudding

    Hi,

I read your post and intended goodies you are planning to make with interest, would you happen to have the recipe for sweetcorn relish please, hope you don't think I am being cheeky, but I would like to try it.

I bought DD and myself those soft socks from primark today - 4 pairs each :D Teamed with the rest of the cozy stuff I already have in and we shouldn't have any problems keeping warm this winter :D:D

Gillaman...yes I remember Liberty bodices...I was an overweight child and must have looked like a roly poly in all the clothes I had in winter, but then we didn't have central heating...do you or anyone know why they were called Liberty bodices, never thought about it until now?

All my underwear was donated from my mums bil who was in the trade.. so I was still wearing white knee high socks at secondary school.... With my mums old shoes and a hand knitted cardigan instead of one from the uniform shop I was not cool. Its a wonder I made it out alive lol!!!:rotfl: I wouldnt mind but we are not talking that long ago...I wasnt born until '73!
