Perhaps they forgot about them or perhaps they were lost and found.

I think I'll stand at my previous theory.

M&S store managers are very high paid high ranking people and they have many powers in their own stores. Plus I'm not lying!

I think highly paid is a bit of a stretch. It completely depends on the size of the store.

Where I last worked, some of the older members of staff on contracts which paid them double on Sunday's were paid more per hour than all the management staff who were newer to the company.

They definitely could override a price, but they'd have to answer for it and all managers as a rule do not override another member of staff, so if someone has refused it a good manager won't change that decision (same with IDing people)

Well the manager I know manages a large store and he is very well paid. He would certainly not have to answer to anyone if he allowed a customer to have a £16 discount in place of a voucher.

In my longish life I've had a few disputes in stores and a manager as changed a descision made by his staff.

you seem strangely defensive and knowledgeable about somebody else's job, salary and who they answer to...

    Anyway.

A manager of a large store would not get involved in such a dispute. The section managers would deal with it. In all my time there I saw the store manager get involved in a shop floor dispute once. They have far far better things to do that deal with a customer with invalid vouchers that are years old.

Like I said, marks and spencer policy is to not have managers override decisions made by other staff (when those decisions are correct of course.) not allowing expired vouchers is a correct decision.

There are override buttons on the tills for a reason.

The only way would be to override the price then put the voucher in the bin. I can't see a manager making a habit of that.

Hardly likely to be a lot of 10 year old vouchers around.

It's £16 at face value so even less than this amount in actual lost profit.

Therefore not likely to be something that is habitual for a manager to have to do.

I would be I know him very well and I can assure you he does get involved directly with his customers.

I can can also assure that M&S have no such policy and managers can override any of their staffs decisions. Of course they don't give things away but £16 is small change.

I'd put money on the fact the store cannot claim any value from trying to bank the voucher and it would go down as a full £16 loss to the store itself.

    I'll stand by mine.

If the voucher doesn't have an expiry date I'm sure most store managers would be far more likely to use their discretion.

You're probably right there but £16 is very small change to M&S
