New and wants to buy a car

Hello

I am a completely newbie who wants to buy his second car so I came along this forums and hoping to get help and advice from professional people.

My budget is low so I was thinking about a car around £2k, diesel, and somehow low tax/insurance . Is there a chance or is it wise to buy a used peugeot ? ( 206, 207, 308 etc.. ? )

I'm open to suggestions, thanks!

Also as mariot has asked, what is your annual mileage? If it's low then you'd be better with petrol. Probably find better range of cars for that price if you look at petrol, as diesels tend to be pricier to buy.

Bought my elder son an 06 plate Peugeot 307 1.6 petrol in May 2013. Since then it has gone from 86k miles to 103k. It averages 40mpg. The only fault has been a split thermostat housing. Everything on it works and it has passed the 2014 and 2015 MoT's with no problems.


So based on my/his experience Peugeots are reliable and economical.

I've always found it odd how people have such extreme views on French cars. Some people always warn you off, yet people who actually own them seem to be happy. I suspect the truth is while they don't have the reputaion of Japense and German cars for reliability, its way OTT to suggest its not sensible to buy one.

In my experience French cars are ok but they don't have longevity and seem to fall to bits as they approach 100k miles.

Why only Peugeot when you cite both the 207 and 308?

A bit like buying a Fiat.

I reckon one of the best small cars around is the old 2004-10 shape Fiat Panda virtually indestructible. But the memories of poor build quality in the 70s and 80s still linger on.

Having said that I think Fiats strength is in small cars not sure I would be so keen on their bigger ones.

Even Mercedes went through an awful patch in the mid nineties when the accountants got control of the company and tried to ruin what made the brand great "build quality".

All that accountants do is point out to engineers that if they carry on designing and building cars the way they are doing then they will all be out of a job.

It's way too sweeping to dismiss an entire make. It depends a lot on the precise model, the manufacturing year, and which factory it was made in (some are better than others.)
The statistics, rather than the anecdotes and dismissive comments you often hear, suggest that in recent years Peugeot/Citroen cars are OK for reliability, no worse than VAG on average (but again, it depends on the model.)
