The funniest thing I heard was in M&S here in Wolves.

I was being served and explained I had a bag already, when the counter assistant described her day.

People had been complaining all day about the charge, didn't believe her about it being law and had been threatening to never come to the shop again.

    Good luck with that. :rotfl:

I was also treated to the sight of at least two people carrying a random collection of goods in their arms rather than paying for bags.

    Cheapskates. :rotfl:
 Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway...

You mean Moneysavers? (You do know the purpose of this site?)

Of course they have simply been people who care about the environment but were doing an ad-hoc shop and didn't have their bags for life with them.

Bought expensive bottle of wine for OH, got to home car park, got out of car, bag split and wine smashed. Now you can see why the 5p bag scheme won't affect me.

That's why I never carry anything fragile or valuable in a single 'free' (as was) bag.

Particularly if they are reused they can have tiny tears caused by sharp packaging, that will open up as soon as they are stressed.

Tell you what did annoy me yesterday the damn self checkouts asking how many bags I had used and not one of them believing me when I said none.
I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.

@Marvin: Odd. I went to Sainsbury's yesterday and bought enough stuff to fill about 5 plastic bags. The machine didn't make any fuss when I said I hadn't used any (I had a large bag for life).

Slightly annoying that it's yet another button to press and wait for the interminable lag.

Morrisons and Sainsburys did for me, the Sainsbury message is very confusing about did you scan your bags etc.

I can't believe how much people are still whinging about the 5p bag charge. Scotland and Wales have been charging for years and it's no biggie.

We take it with good humour that we are too mean to pay 5p for a bag.

In Wales you have to pay 5p for Paper bags as well; discovered this at a McDonalds when I wanted to take out.

Could be worse; in the Republic of Ireland it's 22 cents (about 16p)

I don't think many people are.

This thread seems to be more about how much confusion and/or winging is expected.

I would expect exactly the same proportion of people to whinge in England as in Eire, Scotland, NI or Wales.
