Midland Bank will not be returning to our high streets after all ?

According to Sky News 'Insiders at HSBC' have said that HSBC is unlikely to revive the Midland Bank name as it does not 'Resonate' with younger customers.

The say the options being considered are using the First Direct name, or simply the HSBC Logo (The Red Hexagon) without the name HSBC beside it.

They say that customers and staff have been consulted (I don't remember being asked !).

Its a pity as I would have liked to see the return of The Midland.

  • I don't really care what it's called.

    What's in a name?

So they think that HSBC will rebrand itself to have no name and just a symbol? Like Prince? The Bank Formerly Known As HSBC?

I'm inclined to think this report is rubbish just on that basis. "[Stylised Hexagon] Bank plc" doesn't sound likely.

Prince quickly found that nobody took him seriously when he became a symbol, instead of a name. Rather, he was just a laughing stock.

HSBC would be likely to find the same happen to them.

The trouble with Midland Bank is that it's quite geographically specific. To (re)introduce it could quite likely disenfranchise a lot of people from their point of view. I know we have Yorkshire BS etc but it's already part of the scene etc so less noticeable.

The new name and new legal entity for just UK operations will probably go with something like HSBC UK Bank Ltd. Same logo and colour scheme. Keeps the regulators happy and avoids changing all the branding to purple and green or whatever.

The branch where we had banked since 1970 in February of this year has announced its closure.

Sign of the times and change in banking. I often wonder what our lovely old bank manager, Mr Roberts, thinks of modern banking.

That said, I bank on line and would wish to go back to the days of rushing out at lunchtime to cash a cheque for the housekeeping.

People laughed when First Direct launched. "A bank with no branches ???" It'll never work" Sometimes it's beneficial to do something a bit out there.

I have nostalgic memories of "Come and talk, talk to the Midland, come and talk to the listening bank.......:D
