If you lose your card, anyone can make purchases upto £20.00, which is increasing to £30.00 later this year.

Contactless cards are still safer than cash. Banks will reimburse any fraudulent transactions when you report the card missing.

If you lose your wallet/purse anybody could spend all your cash and you wouldn't get it back.

At least the loss of cash is known in advance.

Most people will carry a two or three cards, each with a £30 limit. If you don't realise for a while (or take time getting through on the phone) the thief could go on a spending spree until the machine asks for a PIN on all cards.

How can you know that you've lost the cash in advance of losing it?

I'd rather lose cards than cash. You have no chance of getting cash back !

I was hoping it would be back, but appears not the case, so its likely going to become First Direct, don't like it for a high street bank.

The international codes still use Midlands, would be interested to see a Midlands cheque if anyone still has one as above.

If they rename the whole business First Direct, it makes me wonder what they'll do with the existing First Direct. Will they just merge it into the main business, or call it something different?

There are loads here. Plus a picture of an old cheque card.

If "Midland Bank" doesn't work for da yoof, how about "Middle Earth Bank"?

Or the old slang name for HSBC, "Honkers and Shaggers"? Very yoof-friendly.
Free the dunston one next time too.

I expect the existing first direct set up will be scrapped. Customers will be "moved" over to the main bank (HSBC) after the name change, the current First Direct will cease to exist, perhaps (hopefully) they will save the staff and merge them into other operations. Not sure if they are based at the same place, sure they have a separate team.

Does anyone know if HSBC own any other dormant banks brands?

A quick look on Wiki and Midlands took over:

    Stourbridge Old Bank
    Central Bank of London
    City Bank
    Forward Trust
    Samuel Montagu & Co

    Nothing there which sounds good.

Perhaps they can merge with Metro Bank.

The first account I opened with Midland Bank was the LiveCash account.

Seems like yesterday; not 17 years ago!

I have nostalgic memories of "Come and talk, talk to the Midland, come and talk to the listening bank.......:D

You have to admit that was a very catchy little slogan
