Let's be honest, being an MP involves long hours, lots of travel if you don't live near London, late nights in parliament, short notice meetings, an avalanche of correspondence and daily abuse. Not many people find that appealing, and I would wager it's even less attractive to women with children, as you are regularly being asked to prioritise constituents over family.
What's insulting is that we have to put up with a preponderance of the same grey haired old men year after year who in no way reflect the make up of the population at large. If the environment and nature of the job is so unattractive we change it. If they can manage it in other countries, so can we. This country is so so conservative! (small 'c').
Some interesting local election results last night:- Labour held Cardonald (Glasgow) South Norwood (Croydon) St John’s (Suffolk) Skerton West Ward (Lancaster). Labour gained Conservative held seats in Sudbury South (Babergh) Fortissat Ward (North Lanarkshire) Hednesford Green Heath (Cannock Chase) with big increases in vote share in nearly all the seats. Where Labour didn’t win there were still saw big increases in Labour vote for instance in Shrub End Ward (Colchester) the vote was up by 20.5% and Labour went from third to second. And to cap a disastrous night for the Tories they also lost two seats to the Greens in Lewes and Cannock Chase.:)0 -
Does make me laugh when Corbyn supporters say they're fed up of grey-haired old men.0

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/conservative-party-members-old-male-young-theresa-may-yougov-a7936011.htmlIn recent weeks, the party has attempted to address this issue by launching Activate – the Conservative attempt to emulate the success of Labour’s grassroots Momentum group that has mobilised thousands of young people since Jeremy Corbyn’s victory in the party’s leadership contest.
Good luck with that!:rotfl:0 -
There has been some really nasty stuff produced by that Momentum Group. Having seen how little capacity they have for being careful about not producing material which could cause distress to some sections of society I for one would never vote for anyone who used them as support for election. We can't have them backing a party in power. They completely lack compassion and no one appears to police what they do or produce so I would worry about what they might do to minority groups.0 -

Parliament should not reflect the make up of the UK as much as it should be filled with the best people for the job - end of. Aiming for more <insert collectivist group here> in parliament at the expense of who does the best job is a disservice to the public. It shouldn't matter if parliament ends up 100% male or female, black or white, straight or otherwise. If you're up to the task, you get the position.0 -

Best at doing what job? In a way that suits their interests or class or policies. I think the public are already being done a disservice.
If you’re making big decisions about people’s lives, it’s better to have a variety of people, backgrounds and experience around the table.
No one’s suggesting a man cannot speak on gender equality issues – they could and they should. But most of the time? I don’t think so. Equally, not every black or minority ethnic MP wants to speak about race equality: they may be more inclined to talk about the environment or health. But there are others who do, and the issues affecting, for example, young black men in our Criminal Justice System!0 -

We've already seen evidence of the way they treat minority groups. Just look at how they treat Labour MPs............
