making the people of the UK poorer
Some evidence of that might be nice as most to date suggests the opposite.
Of course, there is competition for jobs, but our very low unemployment suggests this isn't a real issue, and as for housing, we never seemed that good at building enough anyway, and we've had to pull in skilled people from around the EU to do the job for us!
Those who mither most about immigration seem to be those who just can't stand a bit of healthy competition and/or just plain don't like anyone other than "indigenous British" people, whatever the hell they are.I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.
Like all religions, the Faith of the Invisible Pink Unicorns is based upon both logic and faith. We have faith that they are pink; we logically know that they are invisible because we can't see them.0 -

the reality is that for a great many (mainly young) people in the UK (whether indigenous or otherwise find it virtually impossible to live in a modest family size house.
I reject the line of argument that says because we haven't been good at building in the past, the logical conclusion is to make the situation vastly worse by expanding the population without limit.
A decent house seems to me to be a major component of a good standard of living and quality of life. If you take a view that says decent housing doesn't matter the indeed we have little to discuss on that front.
Increased population puts greater delays on our transport system and greater problems in accessing NHS services.
Again if you take the view these things aren't part of the quality of life then again we ahve little to discuss on these matters.
So let me ask you : what factors do you consider are important for a decent standard of life for the people of the UK.0 -

In many parts of the UK, you can buy such a house for 3x to 4x the starting salary of a reasonably well educated young person, even a recent graduate. If two join forces, then it's not really a problem.I reject the line of argument that says because we haven't been good at building in the past, the logical conclusion is to make the situation vastly worse by expanding the population without limit. If you take a view that says decent housing doesn't matter the indeed we have little to discuss on that front.Again if you take the view these things aren't part of the quality of lifeI am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I was wondering how long until government databases or social media draw a family tree whereby we can all trace our link to everyone else on the planet
Of course we are all related as we are the same species but for a lot of the world going back more than 3-4-5 generations is lost in the fog of time but with computers there will be no loss in family data anymore
So I should think within the next 20 generations or so the majority of people on earth will be able to link a family connection to everyone else on earth. So we will all be related and can look up the human family tree and find out how we are related to the stranger we just met0 -

As I've made no such argument, I'm not sure why you raise the issue.
I don't take that view so I'm not sure where that leaves us. You seem to be disagreeing with views that I don't hold.
And yet again, I don't. Straw man upon straw man.
I've told you some of the things that I consider make (some) of the people for the UK poorer due to population growth.
I can do no more as I don't know what your definition of a good quality of life.
I would be interested to hear why you think high house prices (London nd the SE about 20 million people) etc make them richer. The inability to own a modest 3 bed family home is, to me, a major reduction in quality of life.
I acknowledge that your daughter isn't affected.0 -

London would have got a lot more expensive regardless of immigration or population growth the reason is that London has been in a economic boom for the last 20 years. was that good bad or neutral for London?0 -

How does that work?
If the population was unchanged and all people increased their income, then although the price might go up so the ability for people to buy a modest family home would be largely unchanged.
The issue at the moment is, that the population has risen but not the number of houses, so many people are priced out of being able to live in a modest family home0 -

<sigh>
Perhaps you can limit yourself to disagreeing with statements I've made rather than asking me to justify ones that I haven't made?I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.

I see the age old politics trick has worked. Repeat something often enough and it becomes accepted wisdom.
We have a "clear plan" rather than a "leap into the dark".0
