I'm not saying that a good union is an impossibility, just an extreme rarity.

Mind you, my morals would still prevent me from joining such a union.
I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.

I don't think they are as rare as you think and I can't see anything immoral about trying to protect your own position.

I protect my position via hard work and bringing value not via megaphones and strikes. Each to their own, I guess.

Sometimes hard work is not enough if all employers were good and treated and rewarded their workforce fairly trade unions would not be neccasary but there are many companies that are not. I did go on strike once but very reluctantly as I believe most people who strike do, after all not many people are in a position to loss thier income. Didn't hear or see a megaphone at anytime.

employers will always have power over employees how can it be otherwise? There should be some checks and rules and regs but the biggest counter to employers taking the !!!! is a strong economy and a welfare state which means an employee not happy with the employer or conditions can hopefully find another job and walk away

Because finding good employees in many areas is very difficult, and the good people could easily get a different job at the drop of a hat. Retaining good people is difficult and you have to treat them well and ensure they are both happy and productive.

We have that now for all but the least skilled and/or most work shy.

    Indeed so.
Just as the wholesale condemnation of all unions and trade unionists is wrong, to label all employers in a simliar fashion is wrong also. Even just a casual perusal of this nations social history will inform the terminally dim on here what a vital role Unions have made.
Even though I am personally precluded by law from strike action, it was a proud moment for me when I was instructed by my Union to withdraw my labour back in 2007.

Just as Mrs Thatcher had a vital vole in giving their wings a much-needed clip thereby bringing the country back from the brink.

I will grudgingly accept that unions had a health and safety role before such things became enshrined in law, but they were then in many cases hijacked by the extreme left.

BTW, according to Political Compass my politics are slightly right wing, but nothing like as far right (no capitals) as the modern Labour party. I'm also far more libertarian than any current UK party, so hey go join a union if that's what works for you. Of course, I'll then exercise my freedom to criticise you for it. :D

Not in the more specialist industry sectors nor strangely for those with higher qualifications.
I've on multiple occasions seen friends, neighbours and colleagues told bluntly that they are being transferred (sometime abroad) and they have two options to lump it and move or get another job.

Needless to say in reality the second option was not available which is why the companies know that they can present this sort of ultimatum.
Needless to say also the individuals were not happy and their immediate families even less so.
