Virgin beating deals can only be offered in cable areas. The advisors have no control over these deals - they are only available in cable areas!

People here regularly get 60% off Sky TV packages and I'm sure that a fair few of them (myself included) don't live in a cabled area.

So to say you will only get Virign beating offers in cabled areas is simply not true.

    Totally agree !

I was with VM a few years ago. I left them for Sky and have never regretted it. Sky have always offered me excellent deals to join them and to stay with them. I have always managed to get at least 50% off my TV packages. I have occasionally asked VM whether they can match or beat Sky but they always fail lol.

VM's big selling point has always been their Cable internet but with fibre, etc. I just don't bother.

    VM's loss not mine.

I think by 'Virgin beating offer' they mean you can't ask for Virgin to be bettered in an area where it is not available, but , of course there is no reason why they shouldn't offer a good deal anyway. (TalkTalk deals look good when you consider line rental up front, free vouchers and cashback, so need beating)

If people are more inclined to ask Sky to only beat Virgin's prices, rather than holding out for 50/60% off, then more fool them! I'd never ask (and neither should anyone else) for them to just beat Virgin when there are deals that are much better to be had for no extra effort.

I've actually just priced up my package with Sky with the corresponding package on Virgin. Virgin is £50 a month more expensive than my discounted price.

I had a look at Virgin's site , yesterday and was astounded at the prices. The broadband has a good reputation but the basic tv is little better than having a Humax box.

I think phone/bb are harder to haggle over than tv, as paid for tv is a luxury whereas most of us need broadband and phone line nowadays. ( A fixed phone line is cheaper for us than two mobiles)

Thanks for confirming that VM cannot beat sky.

I cancelled my Sky package and I have now passed my notice period and it is still on. I'm enjoying this freebie of course but should I tell them? I don't want to get charged as I will be paying full price!

...did you get the "sorry that you are leaving Sky" type email? Have you actually checked on MySky that they are processing a cancellation?
Also it sometimes doesn't go off til the day after the expected final day -no idea why !!

brewerdave, yes I had an email saying it will end on 30th September and the bill was paid up until the 30th with the next bill showing a balance of £0 so it's definitely been processed, someone just hasn't flicked the switch!
  • Hi guys phoned Sky 2 weeks ago to get a better deal as I was paying £38 for the box set package. Said that I was gonna leave as the now tv package was more affordable at £5.99 for tv and £2.99 for kids programmes. Guy said best he could do was 20% off. He wouldn't negotiate so I cancelled there and then. Thought I'd see what would happen next. Another salesperson phoned me in the week offering 50% off. Said that's still double what I could get now tv for. He was speachless at this and had nothing else to offer.
Next I had an email offering the basic tv for £5. I saw that Sainsburys had a deal on for £40 + £17.99 line rental for the whole had package, boxset, sports and movies plus the fibre broadband. Great deal but I'm contracted to bt for 11 months for broadband so couldn't take it up in store. Tried my hand on a Web chat with a sky expert to see what I could get, so I mentioned the Sainsburys deal for £40 and he was happy to give without fuss and no issue of having broadband elsewhere.
This is a 12 month no contract deal too.
