Windows update stuck 'checking for updates'.

Yeah but since this is a fresh install of windows yesterday and update hasn't worked at all since then, I cant roll back to anything.
That's the weird thing really. Mine got a factory reset, but wasn't having problems updating at that point, it's only after a number of updates installed that something went wrong somewhere.

Me too.
I've spent days trying every fox Google had to offer.
Now I'm getting an error code which according to microsofts site means there's an update being installed. Which is impossible given its downloaded a total of zero since I did a fresh install yesterday.
I've downloaded the windows 7 iso from microsofts site and will try that as opposed to doing a factory rest using the laptops build in hdd for it. Then install the needed drivers and not all the bumff that gets installed with laptops.
Have downloaded the needed drivers and obviously can use the key from the laptop as I needed to input that to download the ISO.
I've made a restore disk should it go belly up so I can still set it back to factory with the laptops own restore program.
I know it seems a lot of effort just for windows update but it's bugging me now so I need to fix it.Sigless0 -
I take it you've you tried the fix that clears the WU download cache and what have you? That didn't get rid of your phantom download? Now free from the incompetence of vodafail0

Try just installing 10 or so updates at a time rather than letting it do the lotChange is inevitable, except from a vending machine.0

Yes, tried that several times.Try just installing 10 or so updates at a time rather than letting it do the lot
It's not getting that far, i click check for updates, it says 'checking for updates' and that's it, hangs there.Sigless0 -
Well that didn't work either.
So I give up. The only other thing I can think is its my internet connection.
But everything connects and works fine. And I don't have another connection to try and see if that helps.
Have completely turned windows update off and it'll stay that way. Pointless it continually using memory and cpu power in the back ground.Sigless0 -
Stuck again checking for updates with BITS stopped  so went for a reboot and I now have a mystery update installing - no notification that something had downloaded or that a reboot was needed. Now free from the incompetence of vodafail0

The mystery update took over 30 minutes. Nothing new was listed in my "installed updates" once it was all back up and running. Went to look at the restore points and that silent install was for Windows Modules Installer - WU is all happy and working again.
It also looks like *all* my previous restore points have been deleted :eek:Now free from the incompetence of vodafail0 -

Could that be that Windows Modules Installer? Because I didn't have a clue it was being downloaded and installed on mine until I rebooted. And that was with WU set to check but notify me before downloading anything. Now free from the incompetence of vodafail0 -

I've done two I fresh installs of windows and it still won't work.
I have given up and switch windows updates off completely.
Non of the supposed fixes work. And if a fresh install - twice- doesn't work that there's not much else I can do is there. Besides give up.Sigless0
