Windows update stuck 'checking for updates'.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm stuck again trying to download updates on the old Win 7 netbook. Did manage to get over 200 of them installed since yesterday though
but it's cr*pped out again. I *think* I've narrowed it down to the BITS service stubbornly refusing to start but none of the fixes I've found for that seem to work.
If you go in your Task Manager and then the Services tab, is BITS running or stopped on your machine? Windows Update can't download anything if BITS isn't behavingNow free from the incompetence of vodafail0 -

Yeah, BITS is running.
No idea what else I can do. I've tried every fix google threw up, every fix microsoft offer and a fresh install and still nothing.Sigless0 -

I tried uninstalling it. Still no dice.
I tried after a fresh windows install with absolutely zero installed.
No luck.
Micosofts so called fix for this runs. Shows everything is okay. But still it doesn't work.
I've reset windows update. Cleared the cache. Disabled and reinabled The associated services.
I've tried all the reset and fixit bats suggested on microsofts site.
I genuinely can't think of anything else I can do.Sigless0 -
And when you tried Win 10, was it all working properly? Now free from the incompetence of vodafail0

I'd stick with 10 then if I were you
though I know you said you don't like it.
My netbook is now at the same point as your computer :rotfl: that is BITS is running but WU isn't doing anyway. I rolled back to a point from yesterday where everything was working - WU then found another 20 or so updates which I went about installing and then I got stuck again. Gonna roll back again today and tediously install the remaining updates over the weekend 1 by 1 and hopefully I'll find the culprit.
Just for shiggles, I tried to upgrade it to W10 and just got the "something happened" and it didn't want to go any further with the install - most annoying as I found on Google that someone had an insider build running on the same model (Samsung N150 plus) in JuneNow free from the incompetence of vodafail0 -
I think it's something to do with BITS.
It keeps turning itself off. No matter how many times I turn it on I go back a bit later and it's turned itself off.Sigless0 -
Urgh. I tried everything I could find to fix BITS yesterday and couldn't get it to work (couldn't even get it to start at all - got an error message every single bl00dy time)
That's probably not going to help you much though, but the only thing which worked was for me to roll back to before BITS stopped behaving. I did get those 20 remaining updates installed in the end - did them 1 by 1 (and in date order!) - none borked BITS this time. I'm now all up to date *and* my WU is still working (albeit slightly strangely but I'll take it) Maybe there was a corrupt download that messed things up somewhere.

Yeah but since this is a fresh install of windows yesterday and update hasn't worked at all since then, I cant roll back to anything.Sigless0
