Firstly on the anxiety issue, I can totally sympathise with your position, I have similar digestive issues and after meeting a lot of people with this and other problems, anxiety and depression seem to come hand in hand with digestive distress, as it is so awful to live with and feel you have no control over, it is a natural response to feel afraid for your future and wonder if you'll ever feel well again.

But anxiety will make it all the worse, stress and anxiety increases stress hormones and this leads to increased inflammation, heightened sensitivity to pain and all sorts of other problems, so if you get a handle on the anxiety then it can help immensely. Try the progressive muscle relaxation tapes on Youtube and look into Autogenic Training, this really helps my anxiety which I also suffer from. Has your GP put you on any medication for it? There are plenty of anti-depressents that help with anxiety and they arent addictive like Xanax.

Secondly, how have you been diagnosed with IBS? Have you been to see a gastroenterologist and have they done a colonoscopy? I hope this isnt just something your GP has diagnosed without checking for actual bowel inflammation and IBD/Crohns disease.

If they have ruled out any physical problem then try the low-FODMAP diet, lots of people with IBS find this resolves their issues.

Also low dose amitriptyline can be good for relieving the pain of IBS. Lots of standard pain killers have side effects like stomach ulcers or slowing down the digestive system so be careful not to overdo it with those or it could make the symptoms worse. Codeine for example makes most people very constipated, and anti-inflammatorys weaken stomach lining and cause nausea and even ulcers if used for prolonged periods.
Faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
