I'd been with my employer 7 years when I was sick, I was quite bluntly told after 6 weeks they can get rid of me on the grounds of being unable to do my job - this was only brought in under the coalition before that it was much harder to get rid of someone on medical grounds. I went to occupational health, they agreed with my doctor that I wasn't fit to work and it would be 2-4 months until I recovered enough to return, they decided to make me redundant in the meantime as the compensation I was legally owed was only about 2 months wages and they couldn't guarantee it wouldn't reoccur or be the shorter end of the estimate.

Nothing to do with the coalition, it's always been the case that you can be dismissed if you can't do your job.
  • Hi I just want to ask, on a medical note, has your IBS been fully investigated? In my opinion that's what doctors call it when they haven't worked out the root problem.

I'd be looking to get under a consultant and get whatever is causing it properly diagnosed and then treated. Put pressure on your GP to get a referral. Do you have blood in your stool?

Just talking from my own experience here. Don't want to alarm you.

Re. the job, not much to say really. If you can't do the job they can dismiss you. They should be paying you statutory sick pay. Make sure you send the sick notes in!

I had some experience with OH when I was off sick. I found them somewhat helpful in terms of getting me back to work on reduced hours for a while but there was pressure to resume my normal hours. Whilst they were helpful (sometimes), I also saw there Psychologist which in turn made me worse, and in the end I resigned from the job because there was just too much pressure to go back full time and I was unable to do that. In those days I ended up claiming Incapacity Benefit when my SSP ran out.

Please send in your sick notes or I imagine they are well within their rights to fire you.

What do you want to happen? Surely if you are so anxious about your job being kept open, it is because you really care to be able to go back into the near future, just feel you need a bit more time? So what are you doing to get your condition treated/stabilised?

There is no point about getting all anxious about losing a job if you don't think you will be able to take on your duties again for a long time.

Only repeating what I was told by a solicitor. I wouldn't know a thing about it I just assumed what he said was fact. He said it was a lot harder to get rid of someone five years ago without going through a long procedure (so seven at this point) but now after the 6 week time it was very easy.

What does the form actually say? If it says you only have to sign it if you're on benefits other than SSP, then no you don't sign it.
