Here's the post from the other forum I mentioned earlier -

"Noticed 2 transactions for significant amounts of cash transferred out of our bank account yesterday. 1 for £2K and another for £2.3K.

Wife called bank, transferred to fraud dept.

Turns out someone phoned and passed phone screening security and requested the transfers. The operator was suspicious because the caller sounded like a man, rather than a woman. So they called my wifes mobile and she confirmed the transaction, but they were still concerned, so they called the landline and got hold of her there too.

The fraudster then tried a 3rd and 4th transaction, but the bank blocked it.

So they have somehow found out my wifes banking password and security question answers, diverted all calls from her mobile (vodafone say this is easy to do online, with a few codes) and also the landline.

    Scary stuff."

What the fraudulent transaction? She confirmed it!? Der. More rubbish.

Strange the OP said his 'Bank' doesn't have 24 hour fraud reportage, must be the only bank that doesn't. Then he waited an hour to get through to the bank on his diverted to a criminal line.

    Dear Sir/Madam

I joined your forum yesterday as modelbuilder and posted an upsetting
experience about and titled Bank Fraud on the Budgeting & Bank Account section

I thought I might be helping others and be helped about how this fraud was carried out and although some people were very helpful many including long term posters were very aggressive and accused me of being a troll which I looked up as I am new to all this.

I am 83 disabled and everything that i said in my original post happened and I am more than willing to supply information about me to you but obviously not to the public forum as my identity has already been stolen

I have only recently been taught how to use the internet but after the cruelty by some of your members I really don't want to carry on posting if all I receive is abuse

However I must congratulate you on the rest of the site which is an excellent source of information.
  • Dear Modelbuilder,

Once you have been on this site (or any internet forum site for that matter) for a time you will learn that not all the posters stories are genuine.

Some are fantasists and Walter Mitty type characters.
    Some suffer from mental issues.
Some of the complaint stories are totally fabricated; presumably to waste everyone's time -called Trolling.
Some have essential bits curiously missing from the story which leads one to suspect the bank, firm, shop, company, or whoever is probably quite right to take whatever action they did.
and some, sad to say are criminals fishing for information about how to defraud others.

Well, Lloyds phone - not text - to give you a pass code which you then put into internet banking. This is an automated call to whatever number you give them, landline or mobile.
I think Halifax do this too.

Not sure why everyone seems so convinced this can't happen.

I don't think anyone said they didn't? Might you be confusing banks? Or the authorisation of individual transactions (e.g. setting up a new payment) with obtaining the login details for online banking? The latter never gets communicated by phone, by any bank.

Ah, OK, yes I am talking about authorising a new payee.
  • Dear ChiefGrasscutter

Thank you very much for that reply.

I think I might be too old to get used to this new world
It would have been nice to be given the benefit of the doubt
After Carphone Warehouse was hacked last week with up to
2.4 million peoples personal details that may have been accessed
it really does appear if they can't protect their computers what
    hope do we have

I am still waiting to hear fron BT and my Bank to find out what
happened but it does appear that they prefer to keep it secret
so as not to worry other customers and lose their confidence

Although this time I did not lose any money it was not very nice
and suppose I have to think I have been lucky that it has not
happened before in 65 years of banking

Before it happened I suppose I might have been slightly cynical
about my original post as I often thought that these are scare stories
to get people to buy security software etc

However if you read the new Terms and Conditions of Banks you
will learn that there are making their customers more responsible
for fraud ie They will not accept theft if you have allowed the company
to store your card details for further purchases which I think many
    people do for Amazon/Tesco etc

    Thank you again

I'm sorry if you think people have been unsympathetic as most forum members are very helpful. However, much of your story doesn't ring true, so without any evidence to back it up, people can't be blamed for doubting you.
The Bank didn't have a 24 hr hotline

I don't believe this. All banks have a 24 hour no. for reporting lost and stolen cards and fraud etc.
I would so like to go back to using cash but being 83 with no legs incontinent and have cancer I don't have much choice but to bank online

You're contradicting yourself here, because only a few lines previously you said:
.I recently had a card cancelled when I withdrew cash twice in one day from my local cashpoint and was told it seemed unusual activity.

So, you can visit the cash machine, despite having no legs etc. If you can go to the cash machine, you clearly do have a choice in how you bank. Presumably, you could also visit a branch if you chose to do so.
As no money was eventually lost the police do not seem interested

If you haven't lost any money, I'm not sure what advice you expected to receive on the forum.
  • Dear Slopemaster
If you go to your Lloyds homepage and click on forgotten your password or user id it will
only ask you you name and date of birth and will then as you have stated

Well, Lloyds phone - not text - to give you a pass code which you then put into internet banking. This is an automated call to whatever number you give them, landline or mobile.
I think Halifax do this too

    Doesn't seem very secure

Therefore if fraudsters have redirected your landline in what ever way they do it they
can access your bank account. So it doesn't matter how complicated your password is
Not sure about memorable info though which as you know you have to input 3 characters
    from it
