Of course it's a gamble. My energy use is pretty low anyway & even if the switch takes so long it wipes out all other savings then for me the CEC bonus is still worth having.0 -

Not sure if my reply above (post 189) is of interest brewerdave.

What I don't understand is that we've just had 2 or 3 tariff changes in the last few weeks. The latest, V20 I do not think is cheaper than V19 ( do not have my gas with EON but an older cheaper low use Ebico rate) yet EDF and BH have just announced (small) cuts in gas rates.
Have wholesale gas prices for EON suddenly gone up again or is it just the lack of an exit fee of £30/60, that offsets the increase in rates compared to V19? Ie smoke and mirrors.
Hi Patr100
I can confirm, version 20 of our Fixed 1 Year tariff is more expensive than version 19. This is the case for all regions and applies to both dual fuel and electricity only tariffs. I posted something about this earlier in the week and thought it might help if I pick out the main bits as below.
We lowered gas prices for customers on our standard tariff as of 1 February 16. At the time of the announcement (20 January 16), we also released new tariffs. These and later ones took into consideration the gas price reduction.
We review tariffs all the time as costs continually change. As well as wholesale costs, there are various other things involved like transporting energy to individual properties, contributing to Government initiatives, servicing and maintaining meters, investing in future developments, running our admin/billing/support services, VAT etc. These costs fluctuate and affect our prices to varying degrees. There are more details about this on our website.
Hope this is of interest Patr100.

I,m just curious ,,,,,,,(tho I know we wont get the true reason behind it"
what has changed so dramitcally at EON in a week from the release of the v19 to the release of the v20..... that you can justify the massive increase in costs in my case over £200, in other peoples case by as much as £300!!
the statement below seems to me just a load of spin
we all know wholesale prices are not a factor in your costs as they remain low. and even if other costs have risen, why was the v19 so low compared to the v20, surely nothing as happened in a week or so for anything to change that much. both were 1 year fixes, so whats changed exactly?
the AGE UK scandal seems to be tied up in this in some way shape or form, too much of a coincidence don't u think

In your worst case scenario, if the customer was joining us, we'll take over within the above time frame and have a set start date. Difficulties and delays do happen but, once sorted, the account will be back dated to the original start date. This is what we do but I can't speak for other providers. The new supplier controls the switch and, for accounts leaving us, each individual supplier may have a different method.

Hi Malc
Thanks for all the detail in your post.
My worst case scenario though was all about leaving E.ON.
The new supplier may or may not do/act the same as E.ON for a new customer joining them but if delays should occur, then a lengthy switch is a lengthy switch.
It's the time someone could potentially spend on a relatively expensive E.ON tariff, while problems are being resolved, is all I was drawing attention to.
As philw says though, it's a gamble.0 -

To be honest NittyGritty, there's not much more I can add at this stage to what I've posted before and to what Helena has said on the thread below (post 41 onwards).
https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5408547
Our primary task is to help sort out mainly customer service issues. We're always happy to post about commercial stuff where we have the information and where we think it might be of interest or help. Business decisions are taken at a much higher level, though, and it's down to the gaffers as to what they want us to share on a public forum. Rest assured, they are aware of the comments on this and other threads/forums.
As both Helena and I have said, the newspaper article about our Age UK tariffs and the eventual release of version 20 of our Fixed 1 Year product weren't connected. Apart from, that is, the increased number of phone calls coming in to our Contact Centres as a result of the article. This surge was so great that many of our customers weren't able to talk to us about version 19 before the originally proposed time for its withdrawal from sale at midnight on 4 February 16. This led to us extending the withdrawal date to give customers more time to go on to version 19 than would otherwise have been the case had it been withdrawn on 4 February 16.
Totally understand this doesn't answer your questions. I'll be happy to let you know about anything else we're advised of further down the line.

No worries onzey. Appreciate you're looking at what happens when a customer moves away from us but just wanted to put the situation from our end in case it's of interest to anyone else viewing.

As philw says though, it's a gamble.
The standing charge and unit rates vary widely across the market and I have no idea whether my future usage will bear any relation to my current usage, so even the savings prediction is a gamble. If my usage increases then I'm better off, if it decreases then I'm worse off. I used the figures that E.ON calculated when doing their tariff comparison, I have no idea if they are correct.
I fancied trying British Gas again as last time I found their billing to be much less confusing as they billed me every month, rather than E.ON taking a payment every month but only billing me every quarter or Npower never billing me until I left. I would have stayed with British Gas if their prices were competitive or if they gave me more cashback.0 -
edf Blue + Price promise might be good for swapping - 2.475 for gas in my area ( Edinburgh) even though like eon they have INCREASED the unit rate form the Jan offer (2.2271)
Worth considering - no exit fees and they have always advised me in the past about better alternatives.0 -
Tariff hopping is getting harder & harder, thanks in no small part to OFGEM's "simplification" of them.
The volatility of the wholesale market is mostly to blame. The energy suppliers are having to make huge gambles and the customers are then gambling on whether they were right or not.
OFGEM has tied the suppliers hands somewhat, increases in market share look good and we were easily bribed. Now they have to inform the lazy customers about the bribes on offer, then yes it has gotten harder.
Faster current account switching also had some drawbacks to those playing the system.
Ofgem should impose a limit on the time it takes to switch, there is no reason why you shouldn't start paying the new suppliers rate immediately after the 14 day cool off period ends. Even when you owe the old supplier money, holding customers to ransom is short sighted.0
