E.ON price hike!

  • Here in Oxfordshire, the price hike from v19 to v20 is about 33%. This comes out using E.ON's own example consumption figures (3100 KWh/yr electricity, 12500 KWh/yr gas). Given the media fuss about the alleged uncompetitiveness of the recently withdrawn Age UK tariff, I would think the media would love this. Somebody should draw the media's attention: MSE / Martin, you have contacts with the media - how about it?

Yes, v20 is a massive increase. I guess the changes are due to the widely publicised row about the E.ON/Age UK tariff scandal that was all over the media again yesterday.

However, I do think consumer sites such as MSE are to blame to some extent for the loss of some energy deals. MSE used to be the site that was for savvy people to find sneaky deals to save themselves money. Now, however, it's turned into a do-gooder site that tries to be a general consumer champion. So they will attack the energy companies for having too many confusing tariffs which mean it's hard for elderly people to find the best deal, the result being the withdrawal of the best deals so that those of us who are tech/money savvy lose out.

It is to Martin Lewis' great credit that he is now seen as a consumer champion. The last part of your paragraph makes no sense whatsoever. I agree that despite Ofgem's claim that they have restricted each supplier to 4 tariffs, the frequency at which these tariffs are changed only serves to confuse. That said, is it really fair that those who are, as you put it - tech savvy - should be the only ones who benefit from cheap energy deals? In my view, it is time that Ofgem banned commercial comparison sites, collective switches and referral fees in favour of a single Ofgem run comparison site. All energy companies should be required by law to inform their customers when a cheaper deal is announced.

That said, I am but one of those confused non-tech savvy pensioners who has managed to get the lowest priced energy deal on the market today (two separate suppliers) with no exit fees and no third-party referral fees. Now where did I put my abacus?

What happens if someone switches from v19 (which has an exit fee) to v20 (which doesn't have an exit fee) and then next week switches away from E.ON altogether?

That'll be fine phillw. You can move between our tariffs at any time without picking up an exit fee. Going from version 19 of our Fixed 1 Year to version 20 can be done now. Please be aware, you'll need to do the tariff switch before starting a change of supplier. As soon as the account starts to switch, it'll be locked down and a tariff switch won't be possible.

If you've registered with our website, you can switch tariff online. It takes about two and half weeks to change supplier and you'll be on the higher prices of version 20 during this time.

Hope this answers your question phillw. Let me know if you need any more advice as happy to help.

Nice idea. I would guess neither switch would incur an exit fee. But if you're already on v19, you're on a pretty good tariff anyway.

As above, victor. Customers can move between our different products without picking up an exit fee. They only apply when changing supplier and then when outside of the Price Protection window (open 49 days before a tariff ends until 20 days after).

    Hope this explains.

But have you found a better deal than v19

British gas collective is cheaper for me. It still has exit fees, but CEC says I'd save £25 over V19 and get £30 to switch.
  • to be honest I,m surprised MSE hasn't gone with a story on Eon latest v20 tariff and ask them how they can justify the massive increase on their latest v20 tariff while wholesale prices remain low

they are quick to say Eon are the cheapest on their collective switch

then days later they release the v20 1 year fix, which to most people have found to be the MOST EXPENSIVE 1 year fix on the market including myself

    go figure??

The Energy Saving Trust(EST) would be the ideal organisation to operate a single comparison website.

V19 was unusually competitive. E.ON customer support told me that v19 included the 5% gas price reduction they announced on 1 Feb, so v19 can only have been on sale for just over a week.

I have noticed in previous years that E.ON occasionally publish competitive tariffs that are only on sale for a couple of weeks -- I'm talking about public tariffs, not community ones. Looks like v19 may have been one of these.

E.ON customer support also told me that you could change E.ON tariffs as often as you like without incurring exit fees from those tariffs that carry them. I think @phillw's idea above sounds like a most appropriate response to the v20 price hike provided you are on an earlier, less competitive tariff. But watch it -- maybe E.ON will cotton on and re-introduce exit fees as well as the price hike next week...

Hi doubting_thomas and welcome to the Forums.

Just to confirm what our advisor said. We lowered gas prices for customers on our standard tariff as of 1 February 16. At the time of the announcement (20 January 16), we also released new tariffs. These and later ones took into consideration the gas price reduction.

Version 19 of the Fixed 1 Year tariff was on sale from 22 January 16 until its eventual withdrawal from sale on 9 February 16.

You're right, customers can move between the tariffs we've available without picking up exit fees. They only kick in when changing supplier outside of the Price Protection window (open 49 days before a tariff ends until 20 days after). This includes the collective tariffs.

As above, it's perfectly okay to go from version 19 to version 20 and then change supplier. This will mean missing the exit fee on version 19. Just to confirm the above, customers doing this will need to do the tariff switch first. As soon as the account starts to move to another provider, it'll be locked down and a tariff switch will no longer be possible.

Those registered with our website can switch tariff online. It takes about two and half weeks to change supplier and customers will be on the higher prices of version 20 during this time.

Hope this is of interest doubting_thomas.

...similar for me but even better savings ...so now pondering should I move to v20 to lose the exit fees then use MSE/CEC to switch to BG collective deal ?? (potential savings of ~ £69 less extra costs of v20 plus £30 switching bonus) OR wait for the two collective deals due shortly ??? Decisions,decisions........:rotfl:
