Unknown CCJ

Hello,
I've really really messed up and I don't know where to turn. I've looked at my credit report tonight and found out a CCJ was registered to months ago to an address I moved out of nearly two years ago. I believe the debt is a credit card that I defaulted on in 2010 and I've now accrued nearly 600 in charges so the judgement is 2900. I've always had debt but I've never had this happen. I don't even know where to start who to contact. I'm literally the lowest I've been. Can someone please offer any advise?
Thank you

    Hi Sunshine,

Welcome to the forum and well done to come here for advice. This is the first step to getting on top of things and taking the first step takes courage.

Had you never updated your address with the provider?

How long ago did you stop paying it?

You say you've always had debt. What are you doing at the moment in regards to this?

Why don't you pop over to the 'Debt Free Wannabe' forum, there's plenty of friendly members there, who have been in this situation and will be able to offer support and advice.

Or you could contact one of the debt free charities like Stepchange, National debtline or CAB.

Fill in a SOA honestly. Here is the link. You can post it over on the DFW board or just do it for your own viewing/reference.

  • Hi, thanks so much for your reply. I stopped paying back in 2010/2011. I tried contesting it too see if it was unenforceable, started the process then moved and I've never heard from it since. My bad I know and I'm absolutely ashamed.

I have debts which are current and being paid. The original debt shows as a default on my credit file in May 2010.

In all honesty there are two debts that I ran away from also. A credit card which was proved unenforceable with Barclaycard and an overdraft. I've never heard since and neither of these are now showing on my credit file.

I feel hideous. I don't even know where to start.

Don't beat yourself up. You won't be the first nor the last. The important thing now is to see how to deal with everything going forward.

I just realised, I didn't add the SOA link, so here it definitely is.....

As Dobbibill said don't beat yourself up, I can really understand how horrible it feels having debts and feeling out of control but you know what - it does get better.

Do as has been suggested, take it step by step and it can all be sorted out. Ultimately you can only be made to be back what you can afford to pay, you can chip away at the debts and it won't take too long to make a difference. The big issue is when the interest is still piling on but if it's a final figure every penny you pay off makes an impact.

I don't want to sound flippant but it's not the end of the world, even if it feels like that just now, you really will be ok. I've been in some dark places wih debts and thought it would never get better, but it did, you just need to step back a little and realise it's just money and it can be sorted out.

    Keep smiling :)

    Hi Sunshine

You’ve had some good advice from the others already and you can certainly give us a call for free on 0808 0808 4000 if you want to discuss your options with an adviser.

If there’s a reference number by the CCJ on your credit file you can contact the court to confirm which debt it’s for. You could also check the details on this website, although it costs £4:

    www.trustonline.org.uk

As you’ve got a CCJ which is in default it’s a good idea to apply to the court for an instalment plan, otherwise you risk the claimant using enforcement action. You can apply to the court on a court form called N245 to show your income and expenditure and make a payment offer. The court will then tell you how much you should pay each month.

It normally costs £50 to make the application on the N245, but you wouldn’t have to pay if you’re on qualifying benefits or a low income as you would also use another court form called EX160 when you apply.

You can search for the court forms here:
