A huge calendar and an even bigger alarm clock so they can't have any excuses for missing lectures.

The most used item in my sons flat is a George Foreman Grill.
When he was in halls I put all his cleaning stuff (he never used any of it ...) in a large bucket, handy for major hangovers/illness......
Packet of disposable gloves & toilet/kitchen wipes
    Clothes horse for damp towels.
Masses of tea towels, think they use them for cleaning the floor.
Decent coffee, toilet roll, Hand wash & washing up liquid are always well received.
I also hung a few Yankee car fresheners in his wardrobe.
He also took a sleeping bag, spare pillow for mates staying over.
Think I went a bit ott, I was more excited than him!
Edit: Spare Forks, where do all the forks go...must get thrown out with the dirty plates...

I hope the OP has a very large car as it now sounds more like a container load than a box.

Probably also won't fit into the shoe-box sized room in hall of residence.

Or show them where the calendar is on their phone and computer.

Several long extension cables. The wall sockets are never in the right place and never enough of them ( especially in this techie age!).
    A small sharp paring knife.
Earplugs ( pack a few different styles to find out which fit best).
Pillow from home ( no other pillow is ever as comfy).

What about including a small student recipe book?
This for me is a top tip! I bought myself one when i moved to uni (it was called How To Boil an Egg and 101 other recipes for one or something like that :o )it as very handy as i really didn;t know how to cook anything. I ended up buying all three of my siblings cook books when they moved to uni and they've all said how useful they were :)

If they're tea drinkers... a caddy. Couldn't tell how many times the box fell apart or got put in a puddle.

I'm going to get mine a cushion made up with a picture of the cats on it - I think he's going to miss them more than me.
