Phew caught up. Loved the debate
Would love not to work but then we would still be living in a terrace house with no garden, no land, no horses, no dog. Would that be better or worse? No, it would just be different from today. I'd have retired and been financially sound al la ERE.
We all make our own choices. Not saying mine are right. But we are where we are. I live in hope that a relative will be discovered to leave me something. But Mr Watty and I have none that we know of so it is all down to usMade it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became
In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!0 -
To present a contrary viewpoint, I have found the 'debate' depressing.0

How posh you are. I imagine you all sitting around the candelabra like Lord snooty and his chums.
The situation at work with colleagues that you describe is far too widespread in teaching and was one of the reasons I left senior leadership as those issues happen at all levels. We just have to feel sorry for people who are so insecure that they have to put others down. I really hope that you can find a way forward soon.
Squirrel xxPaid off mortgage nine years early in 2013. Now picking and choosing our work to fit in with the rest of our lives!
Still thrifty though, after all these years:D0 -
Thanks Squirrel.
Ed why depressing?
Watty so lovely to see you.
Saved £15 lift sharing. DH dropped me home and has gone to collect the smalls, so I have lit the fire and am on the sofa with puppylove who is gazing out of the window wondering when she is getting the rest of her pack home.0 -

me too.
I like to think we are lucky, amongst our friends were in the 'better paid' bracket (£30k per year as a couple we earn is what some on here overpay their mortgages!)
We were also fortunate that my parents were able to loan us some money to buy our current house, so we can rent out our former home, but this was a loan which is expected to be paid promptly as im fully aware its my parents retirement fund, the commitment to pay this back is currently like a third mortgage.
However this site and our budgeting have enabled me to work part time which means i have some time at home with the kids, but does mean we go without holidays, drive 10 year old cars, eat meat as a treat a few times a week and the kids mostly wear second hand clothes. Work is not a choice for us its a necessity, and I think its very ignorant to assume we are living beyond our means because we struggle, especially from someone who is being bankrolled by their parents, either personally or as a 'business interest'.0 -

*Having to be very nice to BB as she might have seen me on faceache eyeing up Irish Draught Horses*
A good day at work today, characterised by not dealing with too many adults and seeing kids in a receptive enough frame of mind to learn the prerequisite "something".
