I wholeheartedly disagree. There is nothing like working in a 'grotty', 'dead end', 'menial' customer facing job to make you

    1) want to 'grow up' and get a 'proper job'
    2) realise that it takes all kind of folks to make a world
    3) understand that there is no greater monetary satisfaction than enjoying spending money you have earned.

(I say that as someone who financially supported myself through my last year of A Levels, a 4 year undergrad degree and a PGCE. I had the highest A Level UMS score of all the girls in my year group, won a scholarship to uni and finished my degree with an award for the best essays on the course. I learned to manage my time, manage my finances and work with people from all walks of life).

This is getting to be a protracted debate that has veered from its initial intentions. I realise how wrong I am, how right every self made person on here is and that my opinions are worthless.

    Let's move on now.

  • Well I have just been to Sidmouth to pick up a candelabra bought for a tenner on the bay of fleas.

The crazy biatch in my satnav has lost the plot and tried to send me to Dorset.

I am exhausted and aching having taken a sickle to fleabane/thistles/docks brambles and astilbe in the field.

Spooky, I've been watching candelabra on flea bay, they were way more than a tenner though, you got a good deal there. I ended up buying a back glittery one from asda halloween section the other day for £1 , ok for halloween but a bit strange afterwards!

When the time comes, should my son decide to work during summer doing something related to work he wished to enter upon graduation, I'd be OK with that. I don't think students should be working in a supermarket whilst studying to make ends meet, though. Voluntary work is actually something I would actively encourage as I think it's important to give something back to society if you can. A few years back I wouldn't be saying this but after working in a school for almost two years, I'm quite proud of the fact I've managed to be a positive influence (they must really be doomed ) and quite a few have become more interested in music as a result.

Regarding the car, my mother has bought 3 of the last Land Rover Defenders: one for her, one for me and one to be put away until my son turns 17. So, he'll have a car. I'd also like to restore something like a Triumph Spitfire with him over his teenage years.

If he chooses not to go to university, then that is ultimately his decision. I'd like him to go, study a subject of his interest even if he still wants to be a Gamekeeper in years to come because I think everyone can benefit from an education. However, I do not have final say over what he does with his life and will always try to help in any way I can.

Many students (I'd say most students) have no choice but to work - and a supermarket is a better option than some - discounts on shopping (after a time), uniform. I'd far rather my daughter (or any of my 3 sons) worked in a supermarket whilst at uni than did no work at all - teaches people the value of money if you're working for it.

And as to paying for your son to run a car whilst at uni..... that's not exactly a necessity for student life - I know many students who can't afford to run a car and a lot of campuses and accommodation nowadays are set up so cars aren't really that necessary (much better than when I went in the late 80s) We plan to buy eldest a (small, cheap) car once she passes her test, but she won't be taking it to uni - OH may use it as a runaround after, depending upon where he's working (his 7 seater isn't economical for commuting) and then DS1 can use it when he's in VIth form, before he goes to uni (I can fairly safely assume they're both off to uni as one wants to be a teacher (I keep showing them the articles about the numbers leaving!!) and the other a doctor)

  • Maybe it was a tough cousin of astilbe?!

Candelabra was a fiver not a tenner (don't know why I said that).

Quite pleased. Saved £15 lift sharing with DH.

The sanity saving event at work didn't happen.

Our ceiling's are so low that a candelabra would cause umpteen visits to A&E, especially for the cartwheeling, bouncy hoppering one! One day I may own a house where one would look right...
