Wow, I feel the need to go shopping reading some of this. I have half the built in wardrobe in our bedroom, three draws (one being underwear, although I tidied that today, with over 45 pairs of socks I don't need any for a bit) and we have a double wardrobe in the spare room where I have some dresses and coats. I have a small pile of gym stuff in the bottom of one wardrobe. Don't split between summer / winter as a) can't be bothered b) don't see the need c) don't want my clothes smelling of the loft.

I've got half the wardrobe, four drawers and half a small cupboard. Plenty for me. Those of you who have several wardrobes packed to the brim must have spent a fortune over the years. Do you really need it all? Couldn't the money have been better spent? I'd rather have a few good holidays than wardrobes full of clothes I'll never wear.

Oddly after reading this I feel the overwhelming urge to chuck stuff out , I dud a big cull of clothes a few weeks ago but still feel that I need to go through it again as I'm sure even tho the clothes may be expensive /like new/very nice I'm not going to be wearing it again anytime soon

    Stuff stresses me out

  • Over the last year I've become more interested in clothes than I have in the past, so my wardrobe etc has become bigger. I have currently:

Triple wardrobe, but still has a little space to spare
Large drawer under wardrobe, pretty full but I also keep my walking clothes/kit in there.
Set of drawers - 1 small knicker drawer, 1 small bra/camisole/vest top drawer, 1 medium drawer with socks, popsocks/tights, and 1 medium drawer for nightwear, bikini, odds and sods!

Coats and shoes are in the porch area by front door.

Do I need it all? Probably not, but I do enjoy them and love having a lot of choice. Could the money have been better spent? That's an entirely subjective question - everyone has their own ideas as to what is reasonable or frivolous. I'm fortunate in that I can have a large wardrobe and nice holidays - the two aren't necessarily mutually exclusive. In two weeks I will be digging out shorts, strappy tops, lots of linen and a sizeable pile of sandals ready to go on holiday - though I do admit that I have also bought several new items too :D

During my last big clear out I put a bag of 'not sure' items up in the loft to see if I'd miss them. There's one jumper I like but prob won't wear again and one top up there which I want to try as it was put in the 'out' pile because it didn't really fit me well. I've gained muscle exercising since I last wore it so it might now fit differently. The rest, I couldn't really tell you what is there so I obv didn't miss it.

I would like a teeny bit more storage tbh, our divan draws have spare bedding (sleeping bag / summer duvet etc) or ahem bags and random stuff in so there's no room in those, and the space under the spare bed has toiletries / supplies under, plus if I put stuff there, I'd prob forget about it.

Couldn't believe how many socks I had yesterday, more than I need but seems silly just to chuck them until I wear them out.

    Not really.
Most of my stuff comes from charity shops.
Lovely Per Una sundress from our local hospice shop £5.99. ;)

    Do I need it all?
I'm with LilElvis on this one.
'need' & 'want' are very different things. :)
And, also like LilElvis I can afford to have good holidays.

We've been back from Greece just over a week and I'm busy researching our next holiday for the end of September.

Funnily enough I have also recently been thinking I have too many clothes. Most are the "leftovers" from when I worked and had to have a good selection of smart office wear, plus evening things to wear when entertaining clients, as well as my everyday stuff. I retired 2 years ago and didn't really see the problem as I had a spare room with plenty of storage but now my son has had to move in with me I can see that I wear the same few things over and over so have had a good purge. I still think I have too much but some of my "gardening" clothes are becoming really (and I mean really) tatty so at the end of summer some of those will go and then everything else will be moved down a level, so to speak. I got rid of my very smart suits etc. when I retired, just keeping 2 which mix and match; evening wear also has gone except for 1 pair trousers, 1 long skirt, 2 tops and 2 lacy jacket/bolero. I still have a lot of "tops" which I used to wear with the suits some of which I can layer up for winter but I will be going through these soon to try to reduce them. Apart from a couple of thick jumpers and some winter tights I have decided not buy anything for at least 12 months.

Over the years I have varied from dress sizes 14 to 20 (thankfully now 14 again!). Initially I disposed of the size I had outgrown (or ingrown? :o) to charity or car boot. But inevitably I would need those clothes again so now I keep them. However, this does not explain why I have over 40 pairs of unworn socks and 22 pairs size 16 knickers! I therefore have an awful lot of clothes - two double wardrobes, a single for outdoor wear, 8 large drawers and a couple of huge storage bags and an ottoman. I don't feel too guilty as I only buy in the sales and occasionally charity shops or Primark for holiday items. I live in a one bedroom flat but luckily the bedroom is large and can accommodate all this furniture. I quite often decide 'no more buying', but it never goes beyond the idea because I like shopping for bargains! :)

Owning lots of clothes and having 'good' holidays aren't necessarily mutually exclusive. Good quality clothes, even designer labels, can be bought very cheaply secondhand. In fact, I would suggest that spending several weeks away each year in different climates, as we generally do, necessitates more clothes, not fewer.

Not everybody wants to rock the bag lady look while they are away (or at home for that matter).
