I am from the olden days before health and safety so it was expected that you would do Saturday work long before I was 16..
I am not sure which order this was in now but I was a shelf stacker for Tesco from about 14, when it was on the corner of Tipping Street where Superdrug is now. Orders used to come in on the lorries and they would be manhandled onto a conveyor belt up to the stock room upstairs.
The deli counter was at the back of the shop and when you stepped behind the counter it was like stepping onto a stage.
I used to buy a green granny smith and a bag of chocolate pennies with hundreds and thousands on for my lunch on Saturday.
The 3 day week came along, don't remember much about it but all of the full time staff were sacked and the place was run by part timers and Saturday people.
My mother then stopped giving me any pocket money and I had to cloth myself from the age of 14.
I also worked for Tesco Home and ware - long gone - I remember having to arrange y fronts in lurid shades of purple and once I got stung by a bee in hiding on the y fronts.
we had to get the bosses mixed grill from a caf! down the road on a Saturday, it was plated up and we carried it back and I often pinched a chip - he was a massive chap - possibly had mixed grill everyday. I have no idea why he didn't just go to the caf! to eat his mixed grill there.
There was a huge feud going on whilst I was there, no idea what is was about but half the girls did not talk to the other half and innocent me was stuck in the middle of it all - possible to do with a boyfriend maybe ...
When I finished school I worked there as well whilst I applied for jobs, my mother could not afford to send me to college. I was earning £2 but I jumped to £9 when I went to my first proper job - more than the assistant manageress
I also think I worked for k stores somewhere along the line, I can remember hauling huge 24 cans of dog food from shelves onto the stacking trolleys“Create all the happiness you are able to create; remove all the misery you are able to remove. Every day will allow you, --will invite you to add something to the pleasure of others, --or to diminish something of their pains.”0 -
Morning Everyone
Love your kitchen tweets. Well worth the wait and the hassle.
Re the retro sweets, I still yearn for Coconut Banjo's - anybody else remember them from late 70's/early 80's ?
Trying to get DD2 a school skirt. Has to be a particular style and from either of two specialist shops. One has lead time of three weeeks, the other six weeks  Going to have to pay to get a new zip put in her old one while we wait for new one :mad:0 -

Black Tower Pinot Grigio (750ml)
ASDA £4.37 (on offer)
Morrisons £5.99
£5.99 x 6 - 25% = £26.95
then M&M points of £9.72
Can someone please check my maths, thanks
this is not going to be very helpful but Marks have a few clearance wines starting from £4 - the one I didn't see, empty shelf was a red - and 25% off when you buy 6“Create all the happiness you are able to create; remove all the misery you are able to remove. Can we start a (very) short list of who has won on this :rotfl::rotfl:0 -
Morning All - Getting really excited as both my Sisters will be landing in 3 hours!
Got some lovely whoopsie flowers last night including an orchid for 50p. So have put that in the bedroom for my little Sister and the airwick new forest diffuser is also making the room smell gorgeous. Have put together little bag of toiletries as you can't carry them in your handbaggage now and you risk spillage if you put them in suitcase all glitched of course.
Large Gammon - courtesy of Asda's CC voucher in the slow cooker to be served with sweetheart cabbage paid for with a PP. However paid full price for wine - so glitch desperately required.
Tweets love the kitchen - so jealous! Nanny have a lovely time at the Wedding! Ladyshopper hoping things will improve rapidly for you now. Hugs to all that need them.
Have a good one! x0 -
Morning paw sniffers:D
There was no health and safety back in the day.
If there was someone missing on the deli I would be pulled off fancy goods for the busy lunchtime shift and be thrown into the dangerous world of meat slicers and cheese cutters.
I never got the hang of the scales so used to make the prices up:oTo do is to be. Rousseau

I remember getting into trouble when I first worked on the Fruit and Veg counter 'cos I priced the mushrooms up as per pound instead of per quarter0 -

You paid full price for wine :eek:
I honestly can't remember the last time I bought a full price bottle of wine, if we need a decent one or two I use one of my survey vouchers and get the M&S dine in for £10 meal.
Right everyone, I am getting seriously worried. I have one unopened pack of Nouvelle left. Am I actually going to have to pay for loo roll? Didn't manage any of the sada stuffWhat is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -
Memories are flooding back now. When I worked in the garden shop I used to be dared to eat different things. I quite happily ate raw mushrooms, and I found out that charcoal dog biscuits actually tasted quite nice
I also remember one time when I was 14, there was this young muscular chap came in and bought a bag of spuds. I mean the 54lb one. Out of habit I offered to carry it to his car and he said yes, so I did! At that time I was very strong but looked like a stick insect, picked it up easy as anything and put it in the boot of his extremely expensive sports car, he didn't even say thank you :mad:What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -
