A 240gb SSD is in the region of £60, and 16gb ram is £80 odd.

The OP has simple needs. A 120GB SSD would cover their needs and improve performance considerably. At the time of posting, a Samsung Evo 850 120GB was £44. A simple swap of a 1GB to a 2GB module would take him to 4GB RAM. Perhaps £10 or £11. Though as little as £6. So £50 was achievable.0
